Every Day Can Bring a New Mystery

There is always a pleasure in unraveling a mystery, in catching at the gossamer clue which will guide to certainty. – Elizabeth Gaskell

I’ve had a great time playing the mystery photo game with you all this time around. It feels like we just got started instead of being already to our last mystery photo. I have struggled over what to post this time. I had three, maybe four options. Photos I took and considered and reconsidered and decided maybe and then maybe not. You may all get this last one, but I guess that’s only fair since I’m wondering if I played fair with the last one that turned out to be a complete mystery to all of you. I should have given you a better view of the mystery. Still, then it might not have been a mystery at all.

The one thing I am sure about in this game is that I can never be sure which of the photos will turn out to be the biggest mysteries. Wednesday’s picture turned out to be one of those biggest mysteries. A green frying pan or a wheel on a cart or table turned out to be popular guesses. I liked those of you who saw one of those old tin toys or a spinning top. A few of you went the food route. I have been known to take pictures of food. I just did this game with a piece of homemade bread toast. There were guesses of bell pepper, lime. cookie or cake, and kiwi.

I love the imaginations some of you have. Lisa saw a praying mantis. I still can’t imagine that one. I thought Kim’s guess of the bottom of  a Mountain Dew bottle was clever. An earring by Karen was good too. I had to smile at Amy having no idea but coming up with the thought that I might be starting  a new business of making paw print garden stones. Actually a fun idea if I didn’t have to play with concrete and dogs that might not want to step in gooky stuff. That wouldn’t be Frankie. He’d be ready to step into anything messy and then track it around. I’ve had to give him two baths this week when we got back from our walks after he rolled in some cow piles. Very unusual for him, but it made me remember my neighbor Saint Bernard dog that used to love going on walkw with me. She thought she was putting on perfume whenever she saw fresh cow piles. She liked to smear it on her neck. So no, I’m not starting a garden stone business.

There was only one absolutely correct guess. That was from Una. She didn’t solve the mystery, but her guess that it was something green was certainly correct. So here is the big reveal.

So it wasn’t a stick or a pot handle or the leg of a table, but my granddaughter’s arm as she got ready to turn loose of the bowling ball to make a strike. Well, she probably didn’t make a strike but she did knock some pins down and the two of us had a big time bowling last summer. Lee’s green balloon guess was probably the closest to right. I did think some of you would see it was a ball, but I guess I didn’t show enough of the bowling ball for you to see that.

Whether you got the guesses right in the mystery game or not, I hope you’ve been having fun. So we’re down to our last mystery photo for this round of mystery photo game. I thought this one might be too hard, but I tried it out on my daughter and son-in-law, and they got it right off. They didn’t get the bowling ball one. My granddaughter didn’t either. LOL. Not even after I told her that was her arm. You may all know this new one, but I thought the picture was neat.

If you leave a guess, right or wrong or an I don’t know, you’ll get your name in my giveaway drawing hat for a chance to win one of my autographed books. Deadline to enter is Tuesday, Juhe 6, 2023 at midnight EST. I’ll pick three winners on Wednesday and contact those winners by email before I announce the winners on Wednesday night’s post. You do need to be 18 years or older to enter. Again thanks for making this game really fun.

So what is that odd picture up top?

  1. I think the whitish “stuff” looks like a layer of ice that’s cracking as it melts. I’d say it was cooled fat in a pan, but I see two vertical boards as if from a wooden fence above what looks like ice cracking. You’re quite good at selecting your photos!

  2. You are tricky and very good at this. After I saw the picture I could see an arm with a watch or bracelet!
My guess this time is a pile of leaves seen on one of your walks.
    Have a blessed week!

  3. Great work Ann, you got us all! I never would have gotten that one right.
I am guessing the new picture is a creek bed with a dog lying on a rock. Thanks for the fun!

  4. Great job on the bowling ball photo. You tricked us all. This one reminds me of a snake or lizard. Maybe you took a trip to your local zoo. I always enjoy your mystery photo games.

  5. Wow! I never would have thought about an arm and a bowling ball! You really got us with that one! I think you are going to get me with this one because I don’t have any real idea on what this could be. I was thinking maybe something splashing in water with a tree in the background but whatever is in the front almost reminds me of grease in a pan. Thanks for another fun guessing game, Ann!

    1. Ha! I got a different angle of the photo as I was ready to click out of this and I think it is actually a picture at the bottom of the creek bed with Frankie resting just to the right of the center of the photo. I think we have seen this photo before or one similar to it not too long ago! I am a bit more confident of this answer, but I suppose you could have completely tricked my eyes again! 🙂

I really didn’t think that other one would be that hard. I did think this one would be, but then when my daughter and son-in-law both knew it right away, I thought well, maybe not so hard after all. We’ll see if any of you all join them in recognizing the photo. Glad you gave it a second look with a more confident guess. Whether you are right remains to be seen. Could turn out to be that grease in a pan or it might be Frankie.

Thanks for playing. You have helped make this time around for the Mystery Photo game extra fun.

  6. Ok, I’m really, really bad at this, but it looks like a wood chunk to me! I’m thinking I can’t be more wrong, but, we’ll see! Thank you for these opportunities to win one of your books, Ann!

  7. No idea what this is…just guessing it’s a birdbath with ice pieces on the top.
These mystery picture games are always fun….thanks for letting us play.

  8. This one is full of possibilities but I think your family members must’ve had the advantage of seeing the whole picture in the past. It seems to be an outdoor picture, taken at night. I think it’s either a snake or a drop of water. In the water, I can see a black dog, a blonde dog, yoda, a fox, a guy from Star Trek and two people wearing masks. I wonder if it’s actually a cow pie since you did mention those a couple times. You’ve stumped me again.

Yoda and a guy from Star Trek, Lee. That has me smiling. I’m going to give that picture another look because I obviously wasn’t using my imagination as well as I could have. A cow pie? Now that would make an interesting mystery picture. You all might quit playing if I tried that. And I think you’re right about my daughter, but my son-in-law immediately guessing it exactly surprised me.

Thank you for playing and being a good sport about being stumped.

  9. I think I see a little white dog in the front and the back of a black kitty up and to the right and maybe a doll a little to the left and up a bit from the dog. But, again, I can not tell what it is. I even tried looking at it on my iPhone so I could enlarge the picture and bring it in closer. I am not very good at this game, but it sure has been fun playing and seeing the answers. Thanks, Ann.

Glad you gave this one such a good look, Ann. And it’s fun all the things you are seeing. That’s one busy picture and it really is sort of that way.

You don’t have to be right necessarily to be good at this game. You just have to use your imagination and I think you just die. I’ve had fun playing the game with you all.
