Some of My Books Have a Bit of Mystery

“You can fool some of the people all the time; you can fool all the people some of the time; but, you can’t fool all the people all the time.” — Abraham Lincoln, Vanguard Book of Quotations

I know you’ve heard this quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln historians don’t all agree that he actually said this. They have him saying something similar, but not about himself. Instead he was talking about his opponent, Stephen Douglas in a speech in 1858. Here’s what one witness of the speech says he said. “Judge Douglas cannot fool the people: you may fool people for a time; you can fool a part of the people all the time; but you can’t fool all the people all the time.” That sort of gives Lincoln’s quote a different slant. But whoever is right, those words will always echo Lincoln.

Words can be tricky. I was a little tricky with my Random Line in Wednesday’s post. I do appreciate all of you who guessed a random book for my random line. Three of you got it right. Way to go, Lisa, Pamela, and Connie. The rest of you were wandering around on the streets of Hidden Springs looking for a murder to solve. But I didn’t have anybody poison anybody in my Hidden Springs mysteries. I saved that for my Shaker books as I have poisoning mentions in a couple of them, The Believer and The Refuge. So yes, the random line was from The Refuge.

Pulling out that random line did have you all thinking mystery, and I have threaded a little mystery in several of my Shaker books. So your guesses were very reasonable. Wrong, but reasonable.

But don’t worry. You still got your entry into my drawing where you might win your choice of one of my books. Deadline to enter is October 28, 2022 at midnight EST, and before that you’ll have a few more random lines to think about and get more entries.

I started to do the first line from The Refuge, but thought that might be too easy. And I really liked this exchange in The Refuge between Darcie and the young Shaker sister, Mona. Mona was one of those characters who showed up in the story unexpectedly and became a big part of how things ended up.

So are you ready for random line #3? Of course you are. This one might not be as misleading.

“Me? An angel? Far from it. Just ask anybody.”

Okay, I’m ready to hear which of my books has that random line.

Love all your guesses. It’s almost time for me to pull out another random line for some more book fun. Three more chances to get an entry in my book giveaway or another entry to give you an extra chance to be one of the three winners.

  2. This has to be Kate from Angel Sister when she found Lorena on the church steps. I suppose I could be wrong though, but I am picturing the scene in my head as this is one of my favorite books. 🙂

You have a good memory, Hope. I have to admit that scene on the church steps with Lorena is one of my favorites. I like my picture of Lorena.
“The little girl pulled her faded red dress down over her knees as though she wasnt to hide as much of her small body as she could brom Kate. Little bare feet crusted with dirt stuck out below her dress.

So glad you think Angel Sister is one of your favorites.
