Mysteries Abound – Mystery Photo #4

Ann H GabhartAnn's Posts, One Writer's Journal 43 Comments

The almost surprised look that death had frozen on his face didn’t matter now. What mattered was why the man was there on the Hidden Springs Courthouse steps where folks didn’t get murdered. At least never until tod ay. (From Murder at the Courthouse)

Only two more mystery photos for this Mystery Photo Game including the one here. That’s probaby good since it’s hard to find a mystery under every bush or in every picture.

But I’ve always loved mysteries. That is, the kind you read. Reading Hardy Boy mysteries convinced me to try to write my own mystery when I was nine or ten. I’ve been writing something ever since. Not that many mysteries though, except for my Hidden Springs mysteries which are considered cozy mysteries. However, I have often included a little mystery or suspense in some of my other stories even though they aren’t caterogized as mysteries and shouldn’t be. But The Innocent had some mystery there in my Harmony Hill Shaker village. One of the story threads in Words Spoken True was about a serial killer. That qualifies as mystery, I would think, and ended with some suspenseful scenes. Smmer of Joy, my third Hollyhill book definitely has a bit of suspense and mystery. You could even say there are some mystery whispers in my new book, When the Meadow Blooms.

So why not a bit of mystery in my photo game here, One Writer’s Journal? I do appreciate all of you who have come by to give my mystery photos the eye and imagine what it might be. I actually thought last Sunday’s photo might be too easy, but none of you guessed it. At least not exactly. Many of you thought it looked like blue jeans. Some others thought it was something crocheted, perhaps washcloths, oven mits, a sweater or shelf-liner. Shelf liner? Do people really crochet those? A few thought of rugs. On the other end of the spectrum, there were some guesses of lace, a doily, or the edge of a curtain. I had to smile at Loretta’s idea of a handmade rug from Amish dresses. It was blue and often Amish dresses are blue. Imaginative guess but I don’t know any Amish people to give me their old dresses. Plus, I would never get a rug made. Joan stayed in current day time with her face mask guess.

While many of you recognized it was some kind of material, only one of you got closer than that. Lucretia guessed a belt of a sash. That’s not exactly right but nearly so.

I started out thinking I would do the gloves. I even cropped the picture to make a close up, but in the process I saw a bit of Frankie’s leash that I drape around my neck when I walk him and Marley.

Marley’s leash is there too, but I rarely have to leash him. I did some this spring whenever I thought he might get too close to the cows. Unfortunately, Marley can no longer hear. So, he can’t hear if a cow is heading toward him and I can’t call him back . After one of the cows rolled him this year and did her best to kill him or would have if I hadn’t been close enough to scream and come to Marley’s rescue, I have made sure he doesn’t get too close to cows.

But Frankie has run away across to the neighbors without listening to me tell him to stop several times. He gives me a glance back over his shoulder and runs faster when I yell at him. So, he gets leashed in the front field and then I let him run loose once we get away from the temptation of the neighbors’ yards.

This picture was late in spring on one of those too cold for the time of year days and I took the picture to post on Facebook to show it was still glove wearing weather. That smile I’ve got seems to be saying I tricked you with this picture, but I wasn’t even thinking about mystery photos when I took it. But I won’t say that I’m not smiling. Frankie too. LOL

So what’s your guess on the picture up top?

  1. Another good mystery! Whatever this is, it looks a little slimy…or it could be syrupy like honey in a comb?
I wanted to let you know that I’m finally reading When the Meadow Blooms. I’m taking a day of doing nothing…no housework or laundry, no babysitting, nothing except relaxing with a book in hand. Although chapter 16 had me on the edge of anxiety for Calla’s safety! So I took a breather to fix a bite to eat. (Even days of doing nothing requires something to eat). It’s a great book, Ann! I’ll be leaving feedback and reviews soon. This is one of those stories where I can’t wait to see what happens, but know I’ll be sorry when it ends.

Lavon, you and several have guessed a honeycomb. Could be you are all right or could be you’re all wrong. We shall see.

Isn’t it great to give yourself a day to do nothing but read and relax. Thank you for picking my book, When the Meadow Blooms, for your reading day. I hope you’ll like the rest of the story. Sounds like you’re well into it. I had times while I was writing this one that I wondered what happened next and then I’d take a walk and next would somehow show up. I’ll look forward to your review. I do appreciate you being willing to write and post those reviews.

Love the guesses coming in. I wasn’t sure about the difficulty of this one. You are coming up with a variety of guesses.

Lisa B – If I was on the other side of this picture, I’d be like and be completely stumped.

Paula and Lee – Who knows? Maybe you have hit on the right answer, but those morel mushrooms are hard to find or so I’ve been told. However I do have a big place to walk and discover things out here on the farm. Could I found one. Could be I didn’t. We’ll find out on Sunday. And Lee, I too am very glad I was close enough to stop the cow’s second charge at Marley who was struggling to get to his feet. Trouble is, Marley didn’t seem to learn a thing and would still wander close to the cows. That’s why the leash had to come out.

Ann – honeycombs are so unique, aren’t they? Do you think I could have found one in the wild without coming away with too many stings to count? Or course you can buy those honeycombs. That’s what I might have done. If you’re right. Or not, if you’re wrong.

Lisa H – This wet weather has made a lot of mushrooms pop up. Maybe I took a picture of one from the bottom side. It might have looked like this if I did.

Hope – I’m so glad you’re having fun with the guessing. I really didn’t expect to trick everyone on the last picture, but I guess none of you have a dog leash like mine. This one is extra thick and strong to hang onto an extra stubborn and strong dog. LOL.

Hope and Elizabeth – Your guesses of a wasp or spider nest would certainly fit right in with my book, When the Meadow Blooms. Sienna would make a friend of the spider. Not sure she’d be as entranced with a wasp or maybe she would and just know to keep her distance.

Marji, I do love sunflowers. I try to plant some in the garden every year and the birds always clean them out. So, I have had plenty of opportunities to take the kind of picture you’re seeing. Maybe I did. Actually, probably I have, but did I make it into a mystery photo? That’s the question. I’m so glad you liked going to Hidden Springs to help Michael solve some mysteries. I had such fun writing about the folks in Hidden Springs.

Natalya – a sponge in water? That’s a great guess. Especially if I have one of those big natural sponges. Guess we’ll have to wait and see if that’s true.

Tammy, I’m glad you’re missing visiting Hidden Springs. I still hope I’ll be able to write at least one more some of these days. Your guess of an egg carton if very good. I’m not saying right. Just very good. 🙂

Lucy, you and Ann L. keep seeing those aliens. You don’t watch out they’ll be inviting you on some of those television programs where they search out all the weird, unexplainable things in the world. LOL. Love your guess, but I have to tell you it isn’t right. Thank goodness.

  3. I love all the HIDDEN SPRINGS mysteries!
Now for this mystery photo…..you have me stumped again.
I’m going to guess it’s the inside of a sunflower, after the seeds have been removed 🤷‍♀️

  4. You did a good job of tricking us all on the last one. I didn’t think my jeans answer was quite right, and now I know the hint of red material I saw was your coat and not a sock. 🙂
This photo has me even more confused! Maybe a wasp or spider nest? It looks like some kind of goopy substance stuck to it. Not sure. It is always fun guessing though!
