Sometimes a Little Mystery Makes Life More Interesting

Without mysteries, life would be very dull indeed. What would be left to strive for if everything were known? ~Charles de Lint

Thank you all for making my Mystery Photo Game so much fun. You notice I’m saying that because you all weren’t right. LOL. But some of you were on this last picture. I guess I’m a pretty easy guess sometimes with a flower or a butterfly. I love making mystery pictures out of those. And when the first two guesses after Wednesday’s post from Paula and Lucy were part of a flower, then I’m going everybody is going to get this one. And I had thought it would be so hard. But then some of you started guessing eggs

Well, Hope covered her bases and said flower or eggs. Hope was one that got the jam cooking right for the first mystery photo and she says she’s never made jam. Amy said she had made jam or seen it cooking, but that she still didn’t think she would have guessed it. She did better on this one saying pollen in a flower. She was in the ballpark anyway.

Two guessed lemons on a tree. I loved that, Lisa and Briana. I have never seen lemons like you can buy in the story growing on a tree, but they might look like this. My mother sometimes brought a lemon or two home from Florida and they looked more like a funny colored orange than a lemon. She could make a delicious lemon pie with them though.

Emily always come up with an imaginative guess. Actually a very reasonable guess. Yellow golf balls. I’ve seen yellow golf balls. I just have never taken a picture of any. Ola was thinking fruit too with yellow plums. Linda remembered how I love to take butterfly pictures and thought this might be a close up of some butterfly spots. Connie Lee is obviously a real gardener who has seen those pesky eggs on the underside of leaves and she’s right that they might look very like this.

But egg yolks were a popular guess. Janice even added a fork to beat them. But the eggs might not have been as popular as the flower guesses. And the flower guesses were very close to right. No one came up with the exact flower, however. Marji thought it might be a daisy. Angela guessed pansy. Pansy is actually very close. The picture is of the stamens and pistil of an African violet. Long ago in science I learned those terms, but I admit I had to look them up just now.

I’ve always loved African violets. I used to have one that came from a dear aunt’s violet. I cried when it died. I can’t remember how I killed it, but I am sometimes deadly on houseplants. I looked for a violet to give my sister last year for her birthday and couldn’t find one at any of the local flower shops at the time. So when my daughter saw these at her grocery store (I think) she bought one for her aunt and one for me. So far mine is doing lovely. Blooming like crazy and I haven’t even made it sick yet. Maybe I’ve turned over a new leaf on plant care. We can hope.

So now up top there’s a new mystery photo to guess. I’m not sure if this one is easy or hard. I’ll try to be a good sport if you all guess it. I do love Ana who commented on the last picture that she had no clue. Sometimes you just have to admit that. And it still got her any entry in my drawing to have a chance to win a choice of one of my books and maybe a grab bag book too. I’ll pick two winners after the last mystery picture goes up. The deadline to enter is July 31, 2021 at midnight EST. You must be at least 18 years old to enter, but you can be any age to enjoy the game. I do hope you like exercising your imaginations. I have a great (well, I think it’s great) one waiting in the wings. Got to come up with a couple more.

Have you ever had an African violet? Do you have a green thumb? And do you have a guess on tonight’s mystery photo?

Thanks for reading and playing.

Suzanne, great guesses. Maybe right. Maybe not, but still good guesses. 🙂 I’m hearing many of you say your mom or grandmom had violets. I guess they are a bit of color in the winter or anytime. The ones my aunt had were deep purple and a lighter purple.

Lisa – So you think it’s a cow. Well, us farm girls ought to know what a cow looks like. But you’ll have to wait until Sunday to find out if you’re right.

Paula – I definitely have taken pictures of plenty of toadstools. They just seem to lend themselves to the camera. But whether this is part of one of those pictures remains to be seen. On Sunday when the rest of the picture comes out in the open.

Jeanne – I’ve also been known to take a picture of a donkey from time to time. So that could be what the mystery picture is or maybe not. We’ll see. But I have to know if your friend got that violet blooming again.

Lee – you must be seeing something the same as Jeanne, but you’re discounting it and deciding I’m sneaking in a piece of one of the many dog pictures I’ve taken. I’m so glad you enjoy my mystery photo games. And I’m impressed that you get those violets started that way. Well, my aunt could do it too, but I just end up with a dead leaf.

Nancy – you’re the third person to see a donkey face. Maybe that’s because it is and then again, maybe you’re all seeing things. I do know violets do better if you don’t get water on their leaves. I even had Zella fussing about that in one of my Hollyhill books. I think this one for me might be doing so well because I have a special pot that you put water in the bottom and then set the violet pot down to be suspended in that container.

  2. I don’t have a green thumb at all, but several friends gave me plants for my birthday this year. One is an African violet. So far I haven’t killed them and it’s been a couple months. So maybe my curse is broken!

For this mystery photo I think it looks like a goat’s knee.

  3. Your violet is beautiful. I’ve had a few over the years. They would do okay for a few years, and then die.
As for the mystery picture…..hmmmm?? Looks like there’s a face, but, I know that can’t be right.
Once again, you have stumped me. My guess is it must be a plant stem….no idea from what, though.

  4. I’m going to guess it is maybe the nose of an animal with its leg in the back ground. Or maybe its an animals leg. Not sure but its fun to guess! 🙂

  5. I love these mystery photos! I knew eggs were too obvious, but couldn’t figure out what type of flower it could be. You did good at fooling us all! 🙂 I have a house plant that my great-grandmother gave me as a teen as a start off of hers. It is humungous now. I don’t know the actual name of it, but it has larger leaves and also vines out if I let it. I took a new start off of it in the spring because I think it is pot-bound and I don’t want to completely loose it because they don’t make any larger sized pots to put it in. I have had it for at least 30 yrs and I would cry too if I lost it. I look at it and think of her and also I have had it so long that it almost feels like family!
My guess on this photo is the head of a cow looking down. Probably not right-but it sure is fun guessing! 🙂

Sounds as if you’ve done well by your great-grandmother’s plant gift, Hope. And smart of you to start a new one in case something were to happen to the big one. I get attached to plants too. Not as much to the indoor plants, but to bushes outside like my peonies or my lilacs.

I’m glad you enjoy the game. I’m late getting things done so may not get the new picture posted until in the morning. Went blackberry picking with the grandkids and we picked until my son was using the flashlight on his phone to find the berries. It might have been time to quit then. LOL.

  6. My guess for the picture of today is a dog’s leg. I was not very good at even coming up with any answer on the other pictures. I thought this one was easy because I think I am right. We shall see…..
Ann, you are one of my very favorite authors. Your books are all so amazing and I love reading them.
Thank you for all the hard work it must take to write a book. I admire you so much.

    Love to you always,

Thank you, Maylin. I am so glad you’ve enjoyed my stories. It does take a while to write a book and then do all the editing. That’s why I can’t write nearly as fast as you all read. 🙂

I like you guess because you do know that I am a dog lover who does take pictures of dogs. A lot. And I had five here a week or so ago while I was dog sitting for my son. Five was a lot of dogs. But it did give me the chance to take some pictures in between the feeding and petting and walking. So maybe your guess is as right as you think it is. Maybe.

  7. This looks like a donkeys face but I am probably wrong ! My grandma always had beautiful violets ….I have had them in the past . Always water from the bottom of the plant and not too much .

  8. Husband is not doing well and needs everyone’s prayers for healing. This is my first time since the end of May opening many emails-still have over 100 unopened. A very beautiful African Violet! I end up killing houseplants! 🙁 Looks like an animal’s leg to me. 😊

So sorry. Prayers for your husband and for you, Karen. It’s difficult having someone we love ill and sounds as if you’ve been very busy. That’s a lot of e-mails to wade through.

I sometimes kill houseplants too, but I have one, some kind of philodendron, I think, that I’ve had for over 25 years. It was a plant I got from someone when my dad died. I’ve never repotted it and it still is trying to take over my office. Grows up the wall. But right now, I think it needs water. I used to just water it with my leftover tea. I guess I’ve been drinking all my tea lately.

Like your guess. You never know it could be right. Or maybe not.

May your husband rest in the healing hand of the Lord.

  9. I should have guessed that last one I have several African violets and keep making new ones from the leaves. This one looks like a donkey’s face but I think it’s a dog’s knee. I love your mystery picture games.

  10. I think of my Mom when I see African violets as my Mom did very well with them. It was the only plant she ever grew. A good friend gave us one full of blooms. I proceeded to allow them all to die off and never get another blossom. He is such a GOOD friend that when we had to leave town for two weeks I asked if he would take it back home and make it bloom again!

I think the top photo looks like a burro.

  11. I think I had an African violet at one time but I probably killed it too.
This time I think it is part of a toadstool.

  12. Mama always kept African violets. She loves them.I’ve never owned one. I think the picture is a close up of a cow.

  13. Yes, I love African violets but just killed one off because it was difficult to get to it to water it while we were having some remodeling and redecorating done. Mother grew lovely African violets.

I think the top photo this time is a picture of tree bark or a muddy patch on the ground.
