Sometimes a Little Mystery Makes Life More Interesting

Without mysteries, life would be very dull indeed. What would be left to strive for if everything were known? ~Charles de Lint

Thank you all for making my Mystery Photo Game so much fun. You notice I’m saying that because you all weren’t right. LOL. But some of you were on this last picture. I guess I’m a pretty easy guess sometimes with a flower or a butterfly. I love making mystery pictures out of those. And when the first two guesses after Wednesday’s post from Paula and Lucy were part of a flower, then I’m going everybody is going to get this one. And I had thought it would be so hard. But then some of you started guessing eggs

Well, Hope covered her bases and said flower or eggs. Hope was one that got the jam cooking right for the first mystery photo and she says she’s never made jam. Amy said she had made jam or seen it cooking, but that she still didn’t think she would have guessed it. She did better on this one saying pollen in a flower. She was in the ballpark anyway.

Two guessed lemons on a tree. I loved that, Lisa and Briana. I have never seen lemons like you can buy in the story growing on a tree, but they might look like this. My mother sometimes brought a lemon or two home from Florida and they looked more like a funny colored orange than a lemon. She could make a delicious lemon pie with them though.

Emily always come up with an imaginative guess. Actually a very reasonable guess. Yellow golf balls. I’ve seen yellow golf balls. I just have never taken a picture of any. Ola was thinking fruit too with yellow plums. Linda remembered how I love to take butterfly pictures and thought this might be a close up of some butterfly spots. Connie Lee is obviously a real gardener who has seen those pesky eggs on the underside of leaves and she’s right that they might look very like this.

But egg yolks were a popular guess. Janice even added a fork to beat them. But the eggs might not have been as popular as the flower guesses. And the flower guesses were very close to right. No one came up with the exact flower, however. Marji thought it might be a daisy. Angela guessed pansy. Pansy is actually very close. The picture is of the stamens and pistil of an African violet. Long ago in science I learned those terms, but I admit I had to look them up just now.

I’ve always loved African violets. I used to have one that came from a dear aunt’s violet. I cried when it died. I can’t remember how I killed it, but I am sometimes deadly on houseplants. I looked for a violet to give my sister last year for her birthday and couldn’t find one at any of the local flower shops at the time. So when my daughter saw these at her grocery store (I think) she bought one for her aunt and one for me. So far mine is doing lovely. Blooming like crazy and I haven’t even made it sick yet. Maybe I’ve turned over a new leaf on plant care. We can hope.

So now up top there’s a new mystery photo to guess. I’m not sure if this one is easy or hard. I’ll try to be a good sport if you all guess it. I do love Ana who commented on the last picture that she had no clue. Sometimes you just have to admit that. And it still got her any entry in my drawing to have a chance to win a choice of one of my books and maybe a grab bag book too. I’ll pick two winners after the last mystery picture goes up. The deadline to enter is July 31, 2021 at midnight EST. You must be at least 18 years old to enter, but you can be any age to enjoy the game. I do hope you like exercising your imaginations. I have a great (well, I think it’s great) one waiting in the wings. Got to come up with a couple more.

Have you ever had an African violet? Do you have a green thumb? And do you have a guess on tonight’s mystery photo?

Thanks for reading and playing.

  1. My first thought was it looked like it could be a cow’s leg, or maybe a dog’s leg, it looks hairy what ever it is.
I’ve never had an African violet, I’m not very good with house plants.

Olivia – you are joining in with the idea of a donkey or burro. Great guesses. And maybe in the right ballpark. I’m going to have to post the rest of the picture in the mornings since, I’m too late tonight. But we shall see.

Una – I love it when someone sees something different than everybody else. And who knows? Maybe you’re right and they’re all wrong. Maybe.

Jacinda – You sound pretty sure of your guess. Does that mean you have seen a lot of cow’s legs?

Althea – I do take pictures of spider webs. So I might have tried to use one of a mystery photo. We’ll see if I did when I post the rest of the picture in the morning.

Loving all your guesses. I’m slow to the keyboard tonight since the kids came out and we went wild blackberry picking. We managed to rustle up two gallons. Some of the berries were nice. Some small. Lots of red ones, but I’m thinking the deer are eating the ripe ones off the bushes. Anyway, I’m so happy you all are enjoying our photo mystery game.

Briana – You are definitely thinking some animal. You’re not along. Others have guessed the same.

Marji – I love it when one of you simply admits you have no idea. That’s how I would be too if I hadn’t already seen the picture behind the picture. But plant stem isn’t a bad guess. Might even be right. Maybe. Maybe not.

Betty – love your guess. You’re seeing things no one else did, but I can see where you’re coming from. Did you know if you stuff an empty toilet paper roll with drying lint that it makes a great fire starter if you have a wood burning device.

Ola – You’re with Marji with the plant stem idea. Always fun when people see the same thing when they look at the photos. Fun when they don’t too.

Marjorie and Birdie – You two are seeing a donkey face and Birdie is second guessing and wondering if it’s okay for them to get the photos.

Lucy – a camel? Now that’s a new guess. Love it.

Amy – you still have the animal in mind with your goat’s knee. That’s something I’ve never done, but could be I took a picture of how that might have happened. So glad you’ve managed to nurse this violet along. I’ve managed to kill some along the way.

Linda [ horses and donkeys are popular right now. Could be a popular right guess or maybe not.

  4. I think that it may be a donkey.

Emma thinks that it’s a werewolf. I don’t know where she thinks you found one of those at, but that’s the 6 year olds answer. 🤣🤣

That’s funny, April. It just might be a donkey. I have taken pictures of donkeys, but thank goodness, I have not ever taken a picture of a werewolf. But her guess is making me smile. Glad it’s wrong, but very smile worthy. LOL.
