Blackberries and Yet Another Mystery Photo

“What we could consider magic, may just be science that we don’t understand yet.” ― Patricia Robin Woodruff, Strange Tales of Floyd County, VA

Thank you all for playing my Mystery Photo Game. Some of you are really hard to trick into thinking something different than what it is. But I guess some people are simply better at solving mysteries than others. For those of you who have some problems figuring out these mystery photos, don’t feel bad. I was looking back through my file of mystery photos on my computer and guess what? I can’t match some of them up to the right picture. So I’d be right there with you on figuring out these mysteries.

For sure, many of you figured out the mystery picture was purple or deep blue and that led to many of you guessing those blue or purple things. Eggplants, blueberries, plums, black grapes, raspberries and yes, blackberries. Other of you had some interesting guesses. Loretta said catfish and Betsy said a game piece while Ola saw the moon and Lucy an iron fence. But my favorite was Marji’s guess of Marley’s curls I trimmed off last week. Loved that guess, Marji, even though it wasn’t right. Judi, Linda Mc., Una, Janice  and Margie got it right. Jacinda was almost right with her raspberry guess. It was a very close up picture of a blackberry, one I picked last week and snapped its picture before I popped it into my mouth.

It is blackberry picking time. Since my son and his girls enjoy blackberry jam, they are always ready to go picking over in the field. Picking blackberries with grandkids makes it a lot more fun than fighting those briers for the berries by myself. I took this picture of my youngest granddaughter with her full bucket of berries three years ago. That’s the thing with wild berries. You can’t depend on having a great crop every year. One year there wasn’t much rain and so the berries were little and hardly worth picking. Another year the deer and the birds seemed to beat us to the berries. One year it rained so much the bees must not have done their job of pollinating the berries and so again the berries were scarce. And of course, sometimes that late freeze or frost will spoil the berry year. But this year looks to be a good berry year although a nice shower on them would help things. Rains have gone around us but not fallen on the berry patch or the garden patch either. Thunder keeps rumbling to get Frankie worried but the rain slides off in a different direction.

Piper in An Appalachian Summer has to deal with a few thunderstorms. And I even let her pick a few wild raspberries up around one of the mountain clinics.

I’ve gone blackberry picking almost every year of my life when there were berries. For a few years we had boysenberry bushes in our yard and they produced so many berries, that I didn’t go hunt berries in the field but fought the boysenberry thorns for those delicious berries. We didn’t keep them trimmed up and my husband got tired of mowing around them so he bushhogged them away. We still have some volunteer bushes in the garden but for some reason they never produce as well as those we had in the yard. We do have some thornless blackberry bushes in the garden now. Hardly a hassle at all to pick those if I can beat the birds to them. But it’s not as much fun as picking berries with the girls and then enjoying a sweet blackberry cobbler or pie.

New Mystery Picture Up

Okay, I’m ready for a new round of guesses.  Remember, a guess on a new photo gets you a new entry in the drawing.  You must be at least 18 years old to enter the giveaway. Two winners will get their choice of one of my books plus a grab bag book. We’ll play the game with the last mystery picture on Wednesday, July 15th and deadline for entries will be July 18, 2020 at midnight EST.

Have you ever gone berry picking? And what is that picture up top?

  1. Yes I used to love going berry picking with my Granny but I have not been for many years. My guess is bacon or something chocolate, like a Twix bar. Both sound yummy to me.

  2. My first thought was bacon. But after a second look, I think it could be apple stack cake. Or maybe I’m just hungry? 😉

  3. Those blackberries look delicious. I think you may be tricking us with the new photo. I think you did a close up of the chair back spindle in the photo of your granddaughter.

  4. Oh, yes, we had wild blueberries and blackberries while I was growing up. Mama made what she called a “two-story” blackberry cobbler, she had a special pan (which I have now). So wish I could have some of that cobbler again.

    That picture is pancakes!

A “two-story” cobbler, Loretta. Now that sounds interesting. I don’t think anything ever matches those favorite dishes our mothers once made for us.

You are agreeing with some others about those pancakes. And I do like pancakes. So we shall see if you’re right on Sunday.

  5. The hubs took one look and said,’bacon!’ I think it looks more like chocolate with caramel. But then again, I always want chocolate so I might be biased.

  6. Yes I used to go berry picking for years with my mom and siblings. We would walk for miles into the back country. Miss those days and my mom who has gone to heaven a fee years ago. We have some wild berries here but usually the 🐦 get there first. The picture up top looks to be bark of wood tree or fries. It’s a great mystery. Marjorie

  7. My husband and our children used to go blackberry picking every year. He got up really early one day and only managed to get enough blackberries for one pie. I made the crust and got the berries ready and just as I went to put the pie in the oven, I hit the knob that stuck out from the door (for the oven cleaner) and dumped the whole thing upside down into the oven. We all cried–for different reasons. (Mine was knowing I had to clean that mess out of the oven before dinner). (His was no pie and the effort it took to pick them).

I had waffles for breakfast and I think your new picture looks like waffles. Blackberries go great on them.

I would have been crying with both of you for the reasons you both were crying, Sandi. It isn’t easy getting those blackberries and I’m sure your husband was practically tasting that pie. I did something almost like that with an apple pie once, but I somehow saved the pie. I was taking it to my son’s house for a dinner. I told them it was a scrambled pie and my granddaughter thought that was the real name of the pie.

And I do love waffles. So maybe I took a picture.

  8. Another guess, because, you are good at stumping me!
    I think it’s a close up of your cute little granddaughter’s bangs/hair.

  9. Well, I was close but not close enough. I love blackberries. In fact I like anything made with a berry!
This new mystery photo looks like the sideview of a pancake slathered in syrup. Now I know I’m not right but it’s fun to see what the brain thinks the eye sees! 😊

  10. Okay, maybe third time will be the charm….I think it is pancakes with whipped cream on top? 🙂 By the way…your post with the horse apron is making my 17 year old wish that she was 18 so that should could enter! She just saw it tonight from following you on Facebook and is in love with it—she also loves your books. 🙂 She thinks tonight’s photo is a a layer cake…maybe she is right!

What fun that your daughter follows me on Facebook, Hope. I love that. And maybe if you’re entered, she can talk you out of the apron were you to win. 🙂 I like that she threw in a guess too. Both of your guesses are making my hungry, but the pancakes with whipped cream on top sounds best. That’s because I like pies better than cake usually. Guess you’ll both have to wait till Sunday to see if either of you are right.

  11. My first thought on this picture was “Bacon” then remembered it probably has to do w/ the outdoors! Not really sure! I hope that counts as an answer!
