Counting Down Until Release Day

Only ten days until release day for my new mountain story, An Appalachian Summer. A new book being out for readers is always an exciting time. Seems many of my books have had a summer release date. Just in time for some sweet afternoons reading in the porch swing or maybe in a reclining chair on a beach somewhere. You can order it now and it will be coming out to you very soon. Here is more info and buy links is you want to check them out.

This book has more Frontier Nursing Service history. I’ve enjoyed learning about this midwifery service and how one woman’s vision changed so much for so many. Babies and mothers lived who might not have without the nurse midwives brought to the mountains by Mary Breckinridge. But while I’ve included Frontier Nursing history in this story, romance is also a part of the story. Maybe more so than in some of my stories.

So what do you think? Do these quotes out of the story make you want to know more?

Sorry the post is a little late. The grand girls came to visit and I still have editing to do on my work in progress. I started out needing to trim the story down by about 19,000 words. I have 4,000 yet to go. So back to work. Deadline is Monday!!

  1. Oh my!!! You don’t have much time left. But I know you’ll make it! How does one strike out words that when written were important to the story. That MUST be difficult!
    God bless you! 🙏🏻

Well, all words aren’t important to the story, Karen. When you’re writing that first draft you have to just let the story come out the best you can without worrying too much about making every word perfect. So every word isn’t perfect. There are usually places where I’ve repeated something that didn’t need to be repeated. There are little segments that are nice enough but not all that necessary to the story action. When I take them out it makes the story flow better. I’ve gotten down to only 2,900 to go, but those are going to be harder since I’ve made it through the book and any more cuts will be more difficult. So we’ll see. One more read through before I send it off to my editor.

Thank you, Melissa. I appreciate you reading my story when you get the chance. The early reviews have been favorable so that’s always good. Hope you have a great weekend.

I love them too, Donna. They were amazing women, dedicated to bringing healthy babies into the world and keeping them healthy. They never judged. They simply did all they could to help. The courier programs is great to read about too.

I enjoyed learning more about the Frontier Nursing Service. I ended up in awe of what Mary Breckinridge accomplished and how she gave so much to help others. So many women joined in her vision and came to the mountains to give their service for very little pay. But I talked to a former Frontier nurse midwife and it was evident that the years she spent in the mountains were some she loved.
