Mother Nature Putting on a Show

Winter showed up around here last night in a hurry. The weather forecasters even had a new word for winter – Flash Freeze. That was what it did last night and then the rain turned to snow. Woke up this morning to a white world. My dog, Frankie, was happy. He likes the snow and doesn’t mind the wind chills either. Me, I mind the wind chills, but we went walking anyway. The snow wasn’t deep and flash freeze or no flash freeze, the mud was still there under the snow. Walking was a little slippery in places. But it was a beautiful sun filled day. Even if the temperatures were cold, that sun looked good. We hadn’t seen its face for a while.

I headed over to the Rock (my cliff area) to see the icicles. Some little ones. Some big ones. When I was a kid, icicles would hang from the eaves of our roof. We lived in an old farmhouse with no insulation. Back then we didn’t worry so much about pollution, so we would break an icicle off and have a frozen treat until our mouth got frozen and our hands too cold to hold it. I didn’t try to grab any of these icicles. Way too slippery to navigate the steep path over to them. I just grabbed them with my camera.

I like to take a walk when it snows. I get to look for animal tracks. Some besides the ones my dog makes as he trails after every new scent. I saw cat tracks, a neighbor’s cat I suppose, and coyote tracks and maybe a bobcat track. And of course, deer tracks. Always deer tracks.

Now tonight a full moon shines down and makes the snow sparkle. I looked out a while ago and saw a golden halo around the moon. I’m not sure if that was because we are going to have a lunar eclipse in a couple of hours. By midnight it’s supposed to be a full eclipse. So I keep peeking out to see how it’s progressing. It’s cold out there so I don’t stand and stare too long. I looked just now and the moon is half covered. I’d take a picture, but I don’t have a good enough camera for that. Others will post great pictures later, I’m sure.

I love all the unique wonders of nature. Icicles on cliffs. Sunlight on snow. Animals tracks in the snow. Moonlight. And the novelty of the moon being covered up by the shadow of the earth.

Do you enjoy the shows Mother Nature puts on for us with rainbows (we had one of those last night right at sundown), snow, and full moons plus a special treat of a lunar eclipse? What wonders of nature have you seen lately?

As always, thanks for reading.

  1. I live in Eastern Ohio and it appeared to be a winter wonderland out the window of my husband’s hospital room. Staying there day and night I didn’t experience much of this storm. Along I -70 there is a big cliff that gathers massive icicles, which remain a long time. In years past someone would somehow get to top of cliff and pour colored water down over them, so you would have a massive ice scene of pink, blue, green etc. Always interesting!

I’ve never seen dyed cliffside icicles. Sounds as if that would make an interesting view. I passed some today that had melted into glacial flows. The cold is coming back later tonight. I’m sorry your husband is ill and you’re having to spend so much time in the hospital. That’s never fun. Hope he is better soon, Darlene.

  2. I did, indeed post pictures this morning. I just tried to tag you, but not sure if it was successful. I love the beauty of winter, but not the COLD! 😉

I don’t think we have ever connected as friends on Facebook, Lavon. I went to your profile but didn’t see the send a friend request. Not sure why. But I did see a picture of your lake, but not the frozen picture. I have looked at your page with all your sweet doll clothes. Designs by LavonSheree, if any of the rest of you want to check out Lavon’s talent with a needle.

  3. Good frosty morning, Ann! I left a comment earlier, but it doesn’t look like it went through. Maybe the internet is frozen, like the rest of this corner of the world?
I didn’t brave the cold last night to see the lunar eclipse, but I stepped out onto the patio a little bit ago to snap a couple of lake photos. It truly is beautiful…especially now that the sun is bringing a frosty mist up off the ice. I wish I could do a time lapse of it. But today I’m content to just watch it from my sewing room window.
Have a great day! Stay warm!

My website had some hiccups yesterday, Lavon, and hasn’t quite gotten over them. I tried holding my breath, but it didn’t do a bit of good. 🙂 Never does when I have the hiccups either.

Your lake pictures sound lovely. Did you post them on your Facebook profile? Sometimes you have to search out what you want to see on FB since they don’t share everything with you anymore.

The lunar eclipse was neat, but the pictures on the internet show it from the warmth of your computer. And I certainly remember those Jack Frost windows. Now it has to get really cold to frost up my house windows. Do you remember getting fussed at for drawing in the fog on the car windows? I do. But it was such fun to have that drawing window there.

  4. The only place I’ve ever seen sheets of icicles on the hillsides next to road was in Kentucky. To me it was so fascinating I had my husband pull over several times so I could get pictures. We’re just 1 1/2 hours southeast of Cumberland, but we have nothing like that in Tennessee.

Kentucky has a lot of roadside cliffs that sport major icicles in the winter time, Joleen. And the ones on the north side out of the sun can stay there for weeks. I’m glad you stopped to take a picture. I guess Tennessee is a little warmer or maybe lacking the rock cliffs by the roads you normally travel.

  5. It’s a winter wonderland for sure this morning!I couldn’t see the lunar eclipse last night. It was hidden by the trees, and way too cold to walk outside to view it. Brrrr! I’ll just enjoy the photos of others.
My lake is frozen this morning…the first time this winter. I’m happy to be off today, and just admiring the view from my windows.
Jack Frost painted my front storm door last night. That’s reminiscent of childhood, when every window of our house would be painted each morning.
    Stay warm today. Happy writing!
