Everyday Blessings

When I sent out my newsletter last week, I asked for you to name some of your everyday blessings. But only if you wanted to do so. I’ve gotten many that say family. I can certainly identify that. Other mentioned the love of the Lord. That can be an every day thing for sure. And many of us named our furry buddies in those everyday blessings.

I named some of my blessings in one of my last posts. But of course, I would have had to type for week to name them all. So it’s been fun to read the blessings my readers have been sharing.

This time of the year when it’s heading toward winter, one of my everyday type blessings is the frost flower that abounds in the fence rows around here. That is because these white wingstem flowers grow profusely on our farm. I think they must be an invasive plant that is not native to the area, because it has only been the last few years that I’ve been able to find the frost flowers. They stayed frozen all day today since the weather was so cold.

So that’s one of my everyday blessings. Here are few others shared with me.

First let’s hear from Becca.

One of my greatest everyday blessings is that I can speak and sing. I love to sing, not that I’m the best at it, but it does a heart good to sing.

Indeed it does, Becca. I can still remember my mother singing hymns in the kitchen as she prepared supper when I was a little girl. I’m not much of a singer either, but I do hum a few bars now and again when I’m working around the house. Then there’s my husband who is part of the Patriot Quartet, a Southern Gospel quartet. He loves to sing.

Sherri names some things I can certainly agree with too.

There are so many every day blessings. I enjoy a hot shower so much that I often say I’m so thankful for hot water. Considering I was about 8 years old before we had running water, it truly is something I don’t take for granted often. I’m grateful for my husband who puts up with me, cats who cuddle with me, and a wood fire that is enjoyable without being a necessity. I appreciate the rolling hills that provide such a beautiful view from my home. I am thankful God provides writers like you with talent so I have so many books to read. I’m especially thankful that God is so faithful even when I am not.

I grew up in a farmhouse without running water, so I too know the blessing of being able to turn on the tap and have hot water. And we used to heat our house with wood. Good heat, but there is that constant loading the stove to keep the fire going.

Last but not least we have this from Lulu to make some of us perhaps a bit envious. Or at least those of us dealing with the snow and cold winds of the last few days. But here’s what she says.

The first Christmas after relocating from cold to warm climate. Forget snuggling in fuzzy…whatever…with cups of hot cocoa. Slip into flipflops, head to the comfort of lanai, pool chaise, beach. Nothing resembling winter hanging in closet nor cocoa in the pantry. Plus, bright sunshine, absolutely void of snowflakes, icey, dicey, gloomy days. Super plus, blooming gardens year round. Although topical plants are puzzling when coming from the mentality of zone 3 & 4. Trial and error adding perseverance creates all year wonder and color. Warm weather creatures–won’t go there.

Hmm, think she might be talking about snakes, lizards and alligators?? I might not be so envious of them. LOL. But she has some nice blessings to count.

As I’ve said many times, all of you are a blessing to me. But there’s nothing everyday about that. You are the best. Thanks for reading.

Do you live in a warm sunny clime or if not, do you wish you did?

I tend to like the seasons, but I would be happier if the seasons took their turn and we didn’t miss out on spring and fall the way we seemed to this year.

  1. I enjoy four seasons in MD. I’m not a fan of the cold weather, but am so thankful as it warms up again, and even sometimes in between, like today.

I like the four seasons too, Birdie, even though there are days in January and February that I wouldn’t mind missing when the wind blows cold and the weather is nasty. But then we have spring and it is so very welcome. Summer has some unpleasant days too, but here in Kentucky the weather has a tendency to change. So we just say if you don’t like the weather, just wait a few days and it will be something different. We had very cold weather yesterday and then tomorrow we’re supposed to be warm with thunderstorms. I know a dog that won’t like that.

  2. Those frost flowers are beautiful! I’ve never come across any. But I’m usually too busy hurrying out the door in the mornings to look for any. And when it’s cold outside, I don’t go out much, except for going to work.
I love the fact that Kentucky has four seasons, and each one is beautiful. But I wish winter could be as short as our Falls have been.
I couldn’t begin to name all of my blessing, but I’m with Sherri…I thank God every morning for a hot shower. When I think about what my not-too-distant ancestors had to do without…well, we are all blessed!

Lavon, you can’t see the frost flowers everywhere. Just where that certain kind of long stemmed weed grows. So you might not have any around your place. We have plenty and I get a little carried away taking pictures of them. But they are so delicately beautiful. A gift of nature.

I like the four seasons too, but I didn’t like this last year when we seemed to skip over spring and go straight to summer and then skip over fall too. I wanted one of those beautiful Octobers that can happen in Kentucky.

Running water, a water heater, central heat, electricity – all blessings to love.

  3. One of my blessings is to live where snow does NOT blow and where temperatures seldom fall below freezing (though we do get a reminder once in a while). When I moved from South Dakota to Kansas City at age 19, I thought I’d moved south. But the temperature extremes were the same. Fifteen years ago I moved to the Florida Panhandle. Seasons here are less distinct, and winters require at least a jacket of some weight, but when I compare ‘here’ to ‘there’ I’m glad to be where I am. Other parts of our nation offer warmer winters, or hotter summers, wetter, or dryer, and everything in between. Such variety from our Creator! But how comforting to know wherever we go, whatever climate we may live in, He never leaves us. “I have learned in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” Phil 4:11 From my state to yours, my God’s blessings continue to sustain and protect us.

I guess you were going south to Kansas from South Dakota, Jolene. But you are truly farther south now. Sounds as if you’ve found a place you like. We do have much variety of weather and climate in our country. But as you say, the Lord is with us wherever we are. And we are blessed.

  4. My body would love a warm climate but I enjoy the four seasons. We missed out this year as it went from summer to winter. Merry Christmas to you.

My roots go too deep here in Kentucky to consider a warmer clime, Lucy. And truly Kentucky can have some beautiful seasons if Mother Nature doesn’t decide to skip them the way she did this year. One think though, we got plenty of rain. So as long as you didn’t get flooded, that’s a blessing. Everything stayed very green and those who make their money mowing yards had a good year, I’m sure.

      Merry Christmas to you too.
