Marking Things off my Bucket List

The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss, but that it is too low and we reach it. ~Michelangelo

Have you ever thought about making a bucket list? I’ve never actually sat down to write out a list, but there are some things I’ve always wanted to do or see.

For one, I would love to see an eagle flying over my farm. Second to that, I’d settle for an eagle flying past wherever I am. So someday I’m going to have to go to one of those eagle watch weekends at the state parks here in Kentucky at the Land Between the Lakes.

Another thing I’ve always thought would be neat to see is the moonbow at Cumberland Falls here in Kentucky. My husband and I went on our honeymoon many years ago to the Cumberland Falls. No moonbow then. But we happened to be on a mini-vacation with Darrell’s family last week not far from the falls and it was a full moon on a clear night. So all ten of us climbed into a couple of cars and took off for the falls. And there was the moonbow.

It was a silvery bow going from the top of the falls to the bottom. You can’t see the colors or take a picture with a regular camera. You have to have one of those fancy cameras on a tripod that you can set for a 30 or 45 second exposure. I did try to take a picture and it was black since it was dark. The falls didn’t even show up. However, there were plenty of people there with fancy cameras on tripods. So, not one to miss an opportunity, I peeked over their shoulders. The last guy I saw taking a pro picture was friendly so I asked if I could take a picture of his picture. He let me and that’s why I came away with a great picture of the only moonbow you can see in the United States.

Another thing I’ve wanted to do for several years is come to Michigan to visit the Baker Publishing Company that has published my last nineteen (I think) books is. That’s going to happen tomorrow, God willing. I’ll get a tour of the publishing house, get to meet some people I’ve only met through e-mails prior to this and even get to have a book talk and signing at the Baker Book House tomorrow night. I’m hoping somebody shows up besides my husband!

Could be that’s something else I should put on my bucket list – to have a full room at one of my book events. I guess I have had that at my Hometown Book Parties. Thanks to all my hometown reading friends. Love you all. Anyway, no matter how many show up, I know I’m going to have a good time.

Never tell me the sky’s the limit when there are footprints on the moon. ~Unknown Quotes Author

Seeing a giant horse wasn’t on my bucket list, but now that I’ve seen it, maybe it should have been. Plus, that horse is surely a tribute to believing there are no limits to creativity. I saw the horse along with many other amazing sculptures and some beautiful trees, flowers and plants at the Frederick Meijers Gardens here in Michigan.

Sometimes it’s fun to have some surprises to add to your bucket list. Maybe winning an autographed book could be on your bucket list. It might happen. I was planning to announce the winners tonight, but I forgot to bring my list of names with me. So it will have to wait until weekend. But three of you who have been nice enough to read my posts and leave comments will be winning your choice of one of my Shaker books. And since I can’t pick the winner until I get back home then if you comment on this post, I’ll throw your name in my drawing bonnet again.

So what’s something you’ve always wanted to see or do?

Maybe it’s something you’ve already done or seen. Just leave a comment telling us about it and you’ll get an entry in the drawing.

As always, thanks for reading.

I should hunt up a picture of how it looked to me when I wasn’t peeking over some photographer’s shoulder. It was still lovely. A silvery rainbow, Kat. The Cumberland Falls area is a great place for a vacation.

  2. I would love to see an eagle also;travel to one of the habitats and observe how they live. I would like to travel around and meet authors such as yourself at book signing events. The special bucket list I have would be to take an Alaska cruise with my husband some day.

We’re thinking about that Alaska cruise, but haven’t booked it yet, Susan. So sounds as though we have some similar wishes for the future. Eagles are amazing birds. Makes you feel patriotic just looking at a picture of one. 🙂

      1. My sister and I took the Alaskan inside passage cruise on the Princess Cruise Lines. Absolutely amazing! Left Seattle and ended up in Anchorage with several stops along the way. I highly recommend it.

  3. I would like to travel some out west and see the parks and the glorious scenery and mountains. Before that though, I have to take my first plane ride, or maybe I can do them at the same time.

I took my first plane ride to Connecticut when my daughter was working up there for a while. I’ve been on a few more since then, the longest to California. I need to take one to Hawaii. 🙂 And doing both at the same time, Connie, would work. My husband and I made a tour of the National Parks out west about twenty years ago. We saw some beautiful places and had a good time. Did see some snow in the Rocky Mountains since we were there in late May.

We went out west. Saw Yellowstone and other National Parks, Linda. Not sure which states we were in. I don’t think we got to Montana, but I’m not good with geography. I need to study a map. Hope you get to make that trip someday.

  4. I have always wanted to live on a farm in an old house and have farm animals. God has blessed my life by giving me the desires of my heart and granting all three of my wishes . His timetable is just right ! Anne, I enjoy reading all of you posts and comments, if I lived a little closer I would come to all of your Hometime Events !

That would be so neat, Nancy. I love meeting my internet friends in person. So glad you got the desires of your heart and enjoy the farm and animals. I’ve always lived on a farm, but that is also what I’ve always wanted. Love being able to walk on my farm and enjoy nature.

Thank you so much for reading my posts and comments. I so appreciate that and enjoy seeing your comments too.

  5. Been in all states except Hawaii and all in New England. Hard to believe since I was born in upstate New York! I would love to visit those areas! Ann, if you are ever in this area for a book signing, I would be there. 😊

It would be such fun meeting you face to face, Karen. Who knows? Maybe someday we’ll be in a same place at the same time. Maybe in Hawaii!! Wouldn’t that be something.

  6. As you know, meeting you was huge on my bucket list and you generously made that come true!
I would love to go to San Antonio someday with my husband. We were stationed there when we first married and I would like to go back for a trip there.

I don’t feel like meeting me should be a bucket list item, but I’m very complimented that you thought so, Lisa. I enjoyed meeting you and April and your sweet granddaughter that day. Such fun. Maybe that trip to San Antonio will happen for you. Sounds like a great chance for a second honeymoon trip.

  7. My son saw an eagle fly over his farm a couple of years ago and he also got pictures of a moma cougar and her two babies. He lives down in western part of the country.

I am so envious, Evelyn. I guess that’s not a good way to be. Actually it’s neat that he saw the eagle because that means it might fly over my way sometime. Seeing the mama cougar and babies might have been even more exciting. I wouldn’t want to get to close to mama with those two babies though.

  8. Darlene, there are only 2 places in the world where you can see a moonbow. And only one in the United States…here in Kentucky at Cumberland Falls. When the moon is full, the spray from the Falls creates a beautiful white rainbow. I don’t know why other waterfalls don’t produce one.

I have to wonder that too, Lavon. I guess the spray from the fall and the moon align just right for the moonbow. It was a clear night, but we all were wet as though we’d been standing out in a misty rain. I guess we were in a mist.

Skydiving!? That’s not on my bucket list, Emily. Somebody would have to push me out of the plane. LOL. But I hope you get to dive through the air someday.

Thank you, Margie. The room wasn’t full but I did have some nice people to tell about my books. But nobody brought me a jar of jam. 🙂

  9. I don’t really have a bucket list , but I did get to meet BillGaither at a Bill Gaither Vocal Band concert. I have listened to him for years and always played his music in church.
I had never heard of a moon bow, learn something new everyday . Enjoy your visit to Michigan.

I’m glad you got to meet someone you admired, Darlene. Bill and Gloria Gaither have written so many wonderful gospel songs.

And I have had a wonderful time here in Michigan. The trees were simply gorgeous.

  10. One thing that I have been wanting to do, I did a couple of weekends ago, and that was to meet you! I am so glad that I did!!! Thank you!!! I think that driving to Michigan would be a little far for me, though! Lol
Another thing I would like to do is travel to all fifty states; especially, Seattle, Washington and see my grandkids!!! I miss them soooooo much!!!
Another bucket list wish is to move out of my apartment and into a house where I don’t have noisy neighbors on either side of my walls! There are more wishes for a bucket list; but, these are enough for now.

Oh, Linda Dianne, that’s so sweet of you. Patricia asked me if you made it and I told her hello for you. Yeah, Michigan is a little ways up the road, but maybe we’ll be in the same area again sometime.

Those are good bucket list wishes and I hope things open up for you to make them happen.

  11. I didn’t know there was such a thing as a moonbow. So yes, that would definitely go on my bucket list – if I had one. Thanks Ann, for all your emails. Enjoy every one of them.

Thank you for reading my posts, Nancy. I so appreciate that and also that you take the time to comment. You don’t realize how encouraging it is to hear from readers. The moonbow was lovely even only seeing the silvery bow with my naked eyes.

  12. If you and the Patriot Quartet ever come back to Central Park Church of Christ in Tilton IL I would get to meet and talk with you about the books of yours that I have in my collection.

I think I have been to that church with the Patriots once. I don’t travel with them as much as I used to. But I do love to hear them sing and I would love to visit Central Park Church of Christ. Great people there and it would be fun to talk to you, Donna.

  13. I wanted to see a covered bridge, but we went to see one when we went to your book talk back in the Summer. That was a wonderful day!

That’s so fun, April, that you could mark something done on your bucket list the night you came to hear me speak. That was a stormy night too and I appreciated you and your mom driving all that way.

  14. I hope you indeed have a full house tomorrow night! It sounds like it will be a wonderful evening. Your bucket list is great! I saw a moonbow when I was very young, but I don’t remember it much. I’ve always wanted to take a cross country road trip, but I’ve only made it as far as Oklahoma to visit my sister. And I hope to one day visit The Smithsonian in DC, and the Nat’l History Museum in NYC. Maybe someday! 🙂
Enjoy you time in Michigan…I hear the colors are fantastic this week!

It wasn’t exactly a full house, Lavon, but there were some lovely people there and Baker Book House is a wonderful store. So many books! I could have spent hours in there just browsing and shopping. I love bookstores. And the trees were beautiful here in Michigan. Reds and yellows and golds. The locals said that my afternoon of sunshine yesterday was a gift you don’t see that often here in the fall, so I did get to see the trees in sunshine.

As for the bucket list, a trip across country and to Alaska could be on my list too.
