Nature’s Beauty Is No Mystery

Sometimes something can look beautiful just because it’s different in some way from the other things around it. One red petunia in a window box will look very beautiful if all the rest of them are white, and vice-versa. ~Andy Warhol

And so the last mystery is revealed for this session of my Mystery Photo Game. I do hope you had fun exercising your imagination. This last mystery photo wasn’t quite as mysterious as I hoped. Several of you nailed it exactly as a purple petunia and more of you guessed flower or iris.

I was so sure somebody would say planets in Outer Space. That’s sort of what it looks like to me. I guess I was up there with the Star Trek crew searching for new worlds. I did see in the news that they had discovered more Jupiter moons to increase the number from the 63 moons confirmed in 2009. I don’t know how many there are now. That would give Wes and Jocie more to talk about in my Heart of Hollyhill books, wouldn’t it?

But back to petunias, flowers, and mysteries although that many moons sounds pretty mysterious. I loved a few of your more imaginative ideas for my petunia planets. Emily said jewels on a purple blanket. Several thought about the decorative rocks in a fish tank. Betty must have played with those wands that bubble up and down because that was her guess and a good guess it was. Those wands can be fun. Linda thought of purple eggplant with some water drops. Amy wanted it to be a butterfly wing, but she couldn’t think of any purple butterflies. I don’t think I’ve seen any that are purple. Faith agreed with the butterfly wing. Laura said one of those clear paperweights with pretty flowers inside. I liked all those guesses. Not only because they were wrong (after all, I am trying to trick you all) but because I could see what you were imagining. But my favorite guess of all was from Ola who said a fairy’s table setting. Now, doesn’t that give us all a fun picture to imagine? Love it, Ola. Thanks for that smile.

So the game comes to an end for this time. We will, of course, do it again. And maybe we’ll play some other game too. I had fun with this bunch of pictures and with your guesses, right and wrong. Mostly I like the way changing the picture can make us all take a better look at whatever it is we’re seeing. It made me remember this quote I came across not long ago.

If the stars should appear but one night every thousand years how man would marvel and stare. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

How very true that is except I don’t think it would have to be every thousand years. I think we would stare and marvel if it was once every ten years. But we have stars every night. They may be hidden by clouds, dimmed by city lights, but they are there, shining and sparkling. A definite gift of beauty. We are given all these marvels of nature and we forget to marvel at them. So I think I’ll go out and take a look up at the sky.

But first I’ll let you know who the winners of the Mystery Photo Game giveaway were. Patty R was week one winner and chose River to Redemption as her prize. Laura Shuck was winner 2 and she also picked River to Redemption with the plan to donate it to her church library. This week’s new winners were Linda L and Tammy C. I’ve sent both of you e-mails. So as soon as I hear from you, I’ll get your chosen book into the mail.

As always thanks for reading, and remember to enjoy the fairy table setting inside your petunia blooms and wish upon a star.

Emily, I probably wouldn’t have guessed the petunia either, but my granddaughters guess flower right away when I showed them the picture. I’m still seeing planets in outer space, but your jewels on a blanket was a fun guess. Maybe I’ll have to remember that for a mystery photo on the future. LOL. Thanks for playing my game. Always fun to hear from you.

  2. Thanks for a fun mystery session. Ann! I enjoyed reading all the imaginative posts. I find myself looking a tiny details within ordinary things now.
Have a glorious week. I hope to see you later this month at the Paul Sawyer Library. 🙂

Glad you enjoyed the Mystery Photo Game, Lavon. I always have fun with it when all of you take part by doing some guessing. It’s also fun to think about you noticing the details now. 🙂

I do hope you’ll be able to come see me and the other writers at the Paul Sawyier Library in a few weeks.

  3. Again, congratulations to the winners and to those with fantastic imaginations that can see and guess the correct answer! I am truly amazed! Maybe one day…….
Looking forward to your next book, Ann! Have a blessed day! 😊

Glad you enjoyed everybody’s guesses, Karen. I certainly had a great mixture of imaginative guesses on this set of mystery photos. That made it fun. I have had problems contacting winners this time though. I heard from Linda but haven’t heard from Tammy. If I don’t, I’ll have to try for a new winner. I suppose everyone is busy with summer, plus, not everybody pays attention to their e-mail accounts now that they message on Facebook.

Lucy, it’s the fun of guessing, right or wrong. I’m always surprised at the many different things people see and pleased that you all give it the old college try, as the saying goes. Thanks for joining in with the fun of the game and for reading my posts.
