Romance Is in the Air

Why do you think there are so many June weddings? I hear you out there saying schools out. It’s vacation time. But I say it’s because romance blooms in the spring along with all the lovely flowers.

So this post we’re thinking romance with some stories from readers that are not at all the same.

First here’s Mandy with a romantic spring story. I met Mandy once several years ago. Her husband who must have a romantic soul brought her all the way across the state, well, at least halfway, to go to a book fair where I was signing books. He had already bought her the book and the trip to the book fair was a surprise for Mandy, I think. So they found me at the book fair to get me to sign her book. Signing books that are not purchased at the book fair is against book fair rules, but you can believe I signed that book anyway.

Here’s Mandy’s Story

During Spring my husband and I enjoy finding a spot in the hills, a kind of secret place. We have a picnic and then stay on our quilt, usually reading or playing a board game. If it’s a pretty day we may even stay and take a nap. Those are some of my favorite days.

It’s easy to see why those are some of your favorite time, Mandy. I’m guessing you will have many more romantic moments to come in the future. Thanks for making us envious.

I say that but sometimes the thought of having a picnic is better than the picnic itself. When you’re thinking about romance in a secret place, that’s good and obviously works really well for Mandy. But sometimes when you get to that picnic spot, the ants and mosquitoes find you. The ground is hard. The chiggers attack. It rains or this spring, maybe snows. I actually put a picnic scene like that in one of my Heart of Hollyhill books. I tried to find it but it was hiding among the pages. I know I had David and Leigh go on a picnic and find nothing but bugs and rocky ground and stormy weather. But I do remember I had them laughing about it allOr maybe I had to edit out that scene.

Bonnie’s Story

Bonnie shares a very romantic story too. This one is about a wedding day and daffodils.

My sister planned a lovely spring wedding, choosing to have her bridesmaids carry yellow daffodils. An Ohio snow tried to foil those plans when the florist called a day before the wedding to say “he could not get the flowers!” Our lovely German neighbor whose garden was blest with many daffodils, told my sister to pick all she needed! So, very romantically, she and her husband picked the flowers the morning of the wedding, gave them to the florist and the bouquets were made, twice blest!

Can’t you just see that couple together on their wedding day picking daffodils? What a romantic way to start a life together!

Amy’s Story

Red and white tulips at Floriade 2004Amy made me smile with her different kind of love story.

I absolutely love tulips. My great-grandmother had them planted all around the inside of the fence that separated the house from the rest of the farm, and my great-grandfather, in his advanced age, often mowed some of them down on the riding tractor. She would scold him and laugh, and he would laugh and defend himself, and I loved watching them interact so happily about something that would’ve seriously upset so many.  Tulips still remind me of them every time I see them.

What a sweet story about two people who had lived and loved many years together!

I’m glad you enjoyed them, Emily. It’s fun to see love at any age – for the young just beginning couple and to the couple who have been together so many years.

  1. Your retelling of my and Brandon’s story was perfect! I really enjoyed the other love stories you shared as well. Yes, I do believe love is in the air in Spring for people, the birds, the animals. It’s a time of renewing all aspects of life, including romance. I was married almost 17 years ago on June 2, 2001. I thank God for every minute I’ve had and will have with my Brandon.
