A Fish Story Caption

Fish Story – an improbable, boastful tale.

So have you ever told a “fish story?” Something about pulling a fish as big as a car out of a lake as small as a pond. Fishermen are known for their exaggerations. They always claim to catch the biggest fish or talk about the one that got away. I don’t go fishing. Only remember going one time on a school trip.

School trips used to be a lot different when I was a kid. No long bus rides to zoos or fancy planetariums. No, just a ride to the nearest river bank. I didn’t catch anything. Not sure I baited my hook. I had no desire to catch a fish I’d have to take off the hook. I haven’t gotten any fonder of fishing since then.

My husband likes to fish and all the kids enjoyed going fishing with him when they were young. I loved those fishing trips too because I got to stay home and maybe have some quiet time to write or finally get a few minutes to read or… Well, you get the idea. No fishing fever for me. I had better things to do. 🙂

One of my mom’s sisters loved to go fishing when she was a girl and so when I was writing my Rosey Corner books where I used many of my mother’s memories to set up the story’s background, I let Victoria (Tori) love to go fishing too. In the third book, Love Comes Home, Tori fishing at the nearby pond showed up in several scenes. Here’s one of them where Tori is ready to go fishing.

Her mother stroked her cheek. “I’m praying for you, sweetheart. Do you want to know what I pray for you?”

Tori wasn’t sure she did, but she nodded anyway. Her mother expected her to listen.

“I pray you’ll stop being angry at God.”

“I’m not mad at God.” Tori’s denial was instinctive. A person wasn’t supposed to get mad at God.

But her mother simply smiled and gave her another hug before she pushed her toward the door. “Go on. A pond bank might be a good place to feel God’s love. To think about the plans the Lord has for you.”

Plans? She had no plans. Except to go fishing. Maybe that was what the Lord planned for her too. The Bible talked a lot about fishing. Some of the disciples were fishermen. Maybe with nets instead of poles and hooks, but fishing was fishing.

I did so enjoy writing about Tori and I liked going fishing with her in my imagination. She could think on the pond bank or she could just be and not think at all.

The fishing photo I picked for my last Caption Game picture (this time) made me think about Tori and her love of fishing. So what caption are you going to come up with for the picture?

I do appreciate each of you playing my game and coming up with so many wonderful captions. I loved Ola’s caption about how my granddaughter was writing about Oscar so she wouldn’t forget him. And then Marji had her telling Frankie to be still so she could draw him. I think it’s great that you all are reading each other’s captions and trying to come up with something different. Your creativity has made the game even more fun. I do hope you have been having fun.

Remember, a comment with a caption or even a “I can’t think of anything” gets you an entry into a drawing for one of my books, maybe Love Comes Home, and a grab bag book by a different author. Deadline to enter is Saturday night, February 10, 2018 at midnight EST. You must be at least 18 to enter. I’ll notify the winners by e-mail and announce the winners next Sunday night if all goes well.

Now it’s your turn to talk. What’s your caption?

As always, thanks for reading!

  1. “Let me help you hold him!”

Did you realize that the only place in the Bible that mentions using a hook was when Jesus sent Peter out to catch the fish with money in its mouth to pay his taxes? I thought that was interesting. I hadn’t realized it until we had a Bible study on that scripture recently.

Hmm, that would take a big fish bowl. But then I’ve seen some fish mounted and on walls. Thank goodness not on my walls, Connie. 🙂

Love your captions, everybody. Paula, he had a lot of witnesses around the pond so he might not get away with that. Actually, he did mostly catch it himself – with a little help from his friends.

Diana – That’s cute. And maybe some boys are afraid of worms. And some boys like to chase girls who are afraid of worms. Not sure if girls do the same. 🙂

Becky – Like the no fish teeth. In the story I talk about in the post, Love Comes Home, Tori and Graham talk about whether a fish has a tongue. I even researched that online to try to find out if they did or not. 🙂

Marji – A picture for proof is always good or used to be before they started photo shopping everything. Sigh. But this one is a true “fish story.”

  3. Well hold still so we can get a picture of this big mouth bass you caught!
Then we should release him so he can grow up to be a “big boy” like you.

Catch and release, Pat. I think that’s what they did. We can hope the fish swam back down in the deep and did some more growing.

  4. “We finally caught that big ole fish that kept getting away…ain’t he a beauty!”

I have a picture taken early one morning about 65 years ago of my siblings and I in our ‘sleep wear’ holding a string of fish that our Granddad had just caught and had come by to show us. They were big fish but we kids don’t look too happy or impressed…we look more like we are still half asleep. We loved our Granddad, though, and we were trying to hold up those fish as best we could.

Connie, it is fun to catch the one that kept getting away. Well, it would be if you liked to fish. I’d rather they just got away. I like the story about your granddad wanting to show you his fish. A picture with many memories for you.

  5. “I had to help him pull this fish out of the river – it’s almost as big as he is!”

(And I purposely don’t read anyone else’s until after I’ve come up with mine :-))

Well, since you were first up this time, you didn’t have to be careful not to read the other comments, Margaret. I like your caption. Actually, that’s sort of what happened. The little guy had never been fishing before so his cousin was helping him and did help him land this fish. The other kids had been catching fish and this one hadn’t until he pulled in the biggest one of the day.
