“Love at first sight is easy to understand; it’s when two people have been looking at each other for a lifetime that it becomes a miracle.” – Sam Levenson
Happy anniversary to me and to my husband.
This picture happened many, many years ago when my husband and I said vows promising to love and honor each other forever. Then we headed out of the church to start our marriage. I was very young. Darrell wasn’t much older.
Our lives were changed forever. For the good. Not that everything has always been good. There have been times when money was tight or almost nonexistent, but we never lacked food on the table. We lived simply. Went to church every Sunday. Darrell got a job. I stayed home and took care of our babies and tried to write something worth others reading. We farmed. For a while, that was Darrell’s job. Something always happened good when we needed it to. We had three beautiful children. I kept writing and eventually wrote a novel that found a publisher. But it wasn’t a smooth writing road after that, but I persevered.
“There is no more lovely, friendly and charming relationship, communion or company than good marriage.” – Martin Luther
We bought a farm, built a house. Darrell went back to a public job. We kept farming too. I still wrote in between doing temporary secretarial work at an insurance office. The years passed. The kids grew up, went to college, spread their wings and left home. They found people to love and married. My sons gifted us with grandchildren. Nine of them. Things got more crowded when it was Christmas at our house.
Back when my sisters and I and our families would be sharing Sunday dinner with my parents, my dad would sometimes look at my mother and shake his head. Then, while the kids were laughing at the kids’ table in the kitchen and we were all talking around the dining table, he would say, “Just look what we started by getting married.”
I can look at my husband and say that now. The picture below was at Christmas six years. Since then we’ve added some new faces. Another granddaughter got married and others have boyfriends they bring with them on Christmas. I love the smiles here.
This lovely family is part of our mosaic.
“Marriage is a mosaic you build with your spouse. Millions of tiny moments that create your love story.” – Jennifer Smith

“Being in a long marriage is a little bit like that nice cup of coffee every morning – I might have it every day, but I still enjoy it.” – Stephen Gaines
This last picture was taken on our 60th anniversary last year. And so we’ve added another year together and are ready to start a next one. We’re getting older but still glad to wake up each day sharing life as a married couple.
