“Butterflies are nature’s angels. They remind us what a gift it is to be alive.” — Robyn Nola

When you see a butterfly floating past you on a summer breeze, are you amazed at the beauty of our world? We rush through our days and then are stopped for a moment and reminded of peace at the sight of a butterfly. But we don’t always think of the caterpillars we may have brushed away from us on an earlier day or perhaps stepped on before it could become a cocoon or chrysalis to make the amazing change into beauty on wing.

We are reminded of the cycle of life by the butterfly. And the wonder. And how short life can be.

“The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough.”– Rabindranath Tagore

We sometimes feel as though we never have enough time. We can forget to take the time to transform from our caterpillar selves by giving our spirits the necessary spiritual quiet and rest to eventually become all that we are meant to be. Can you imagine the first human to note that the lowly caterpillar crawling its laborious way along the ground would turn into a winged creature floating on the wind? We people can be the same in some ways and muddle along until we burst free and become all the Lord always wanted us to be.

“Butterflies are God’s confetti, thrown upon the Earth in celebration of His love.” — K. D’Angelo

“Butterflies are like angel’s kisses sent from heaven.” — Malia Kirk

In my last newsletter, I asked readers to share a story with me about some special blessing that had come unexpectedly at the perfect time for them. I am always blessed by the stories my readers share. Alicia shared this special blessing the Lord poured down on her at a sorrowing time in her life.

Something that happened was after my mom passed away. My mom was in the hospital and she was very sick. My 2  sisters and I were in the hospital with her during the day and she was so very thirsty and she could not have anything to drink at all cause they were running tests on her. All she could have were ice cubes and we could put a wet cloth on her lips.  It was so hard seeing her go through this and asking for a drink of water. That evening she passed away surrounded by loved ones. My 2 sisters and one of my brothers were there with her.  2 of my brothers lived too far to get there on time. Well, her being thirsty always stayed with me. I live 5 hours away from her so when I came back home about 2 weeks after, I was sitting on our patio swing in our backyard and there was this butterfly just sipping away on our pansies. Well, I saw the butterfly getting a fill and I saw it as a sign from God that my mom was not thirsty anymore and she never would be again. It was very comforting to me.

But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life. …John 4:14 (NLTV)

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. …2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)

That final transformation comes when we pass over to heaven.

The winners of my Summer Newsletter giveaway were Cynthia H of New Jersey and Rita K, Oregon. They both picked my new book, The Pursuit of Elena Bradford. I’ll have a new giveaway here on my blog soon and will send out another newsletter in September. You can sign up for it on the form in the margins of my website.

  1. Congrats to the winners! I always love seeing butterflies around my flowers. It’s hard to take a picture of them, they move so fast. You have captured some beautiful butterfly pictures on this page.

Butterflies are hard to get to sit still long enough to get a picture, but I can sometimes sneak up on them in the garden on the zinnias or the butterfly bush or the blooms in the hayfield. I have a harder time getting a picture of dragonflies. Those can really move and dart away quickly. I think I need to do a post on dragonflies. I thought maybe I already had, but only in passing in a mystery photo in 2018.

However, I do have the most wonderful story about dragonflies someone told me years ago. Here’s the link if you want to read it. I might repost it someday. The Blessing of the Dragonfly. https://www.annhgabhart.com/2008/09/18/blessing-of-dragonfly/

  2. I live near Joplin, Missouri. After the EF5 tornado ripped through the community in 2011, many children reported seeing large butterflies near and around them. A lot of us feel those were angels protecting them and bringing comfort!

I also deliberately plant extra dill and parsley in my garden for the swallowtail larvae to feed on. Yesterday morning, while watering, I noticed 3 cocoons on the dill plant. It’s a promise that one of God’s most beautiful creations will be feasting on the nectar from my flowers in the next few days! He is so good!

Love your story about the butterflies and the children, Judi. I wonder if some of these children forever had a special feeling when they saw butterflies or still see butterflies. And great that you plant the extra dill and parsley to give the butterflies a chance to find wings.
