What did you like best about going back to school in the fall or actually late summer around our way these days? When I was a kid, school usually started the day after Labor Day. That seemed the official end of summer.

I was always ready to go back to school and re-connect with my friends and figure out what we might do next. That is, beside learn things. The learning things was expected. I always wished that I had more reading and writing in my classes. I’m sure the other kids would have groaned if that had been true about writing themes or research papers. In high school, I did have to or perhaps I should say got to write research papers, or what we called term papers, in English class with footnotes and everything.

We were allowed to pick our own subjects but had to get approval from the teacher for whatever we chose. I picked Shakespeare for one even though I hadn’t been crazy about reading Shakespeare. I guess I thought that would make me more literary. The teacher thought I picked a subject too broad. The other time I picked dogs. I’m sure you can’t imagine a dog lover like me choosing that topic! Well, my teacher actually couldn’t. She gave me a look that held much doubt as she was surely thinking that she didn’t really want to read a paper on dogs, but she reluctantly agreed.  Both papers worked out and the teacher even seemed to like finding out more about dogs. LOL.

Those back to school memories are my way of leading into talking about this amazing Back-2-School Booksta Win giveaway. 1. I actually have won several books in giveaways in the past years. This year I haven’t won any but I always think it wasn’t meant to be my turn to win. I loved doing my last research paper for my senior year of HS. It had to be a lot of pages with footnotes and we had to have millions of index cards. 😳 I can’t remember why we had to have them. Hey, I’m 60 now!! 😂 I chose my favorite topic The Oregon Trail and like you the teacher had to approve it. I was so happy she said yes and I’ve wished I still had it but she asked if she could keep it for future students. I was on cloud 9+ because I was one of the students she chose. To this day my favorite books are about wagon trains.
I love reading about your experience with you research paper. It brought back some wonderful memories of that subject in school.

I had forgotten about the index cards, Pam. But I had to do those too. I think they were where we were supposed to notate the history or facts and the resource so that we could add those footnotes later. The things we remember and enjoyed when we were in school. Sounds as if you did yours just right.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find that if I cleaned out some drawers of the old desk I had as a teen I might find those papers. I know I have some of the old notebooks with my first stories there.

  3. I like to enter book giveaways, mainly because I love to read. I’ve been blessed to win two of your book giveaways. Can’t say I loved school, though. It was okay but I’d have much rather learned on my own, pursuing my own interests. All my friends lived in my own neighborhood so we didn’t need to go to school to see each other.

Well, good for you, Lee. I’m glad you won a couple of my books and hope you enjoyed the story.

I never thought about not going to school and studying from home. That wasn’t done much (or any) when I was a kid. I don’t think my mom would have signed up for that nor would I. Having the internet has changed that and made learning on your own easier and better if you’re self-disciplined.

  4. Yes, I enjoy entering the giveaways. In fact just entered the back to school scavenger hunt. I have won many books. I won the Valentine giveaway this year. It’ always surprising and exciting!

  5. I enter many giveaways and hardly win anymore. Last time I won a book is probably at least 4 or more years ago. I think the reason is because there are so many entrants.

Uh-oh, Jolynn. Sounds as though you have my kind of luck in drawings. I have won a few things in the past. I did a post about that once when I won the prize when I didn’t really want to win it. The odds can be long. This Booksta Giveaway, for example, is drawing in the entrants. My newsletter always has a nice turn out with people signing up for a chance at the prizes. The best odds of winning is entering her on my blog posts when I run a giveaway. I’ll give away some more books.

  6. I always enjoyed going to school. English/Literature and History were my favorite subjects. I never minded the essay questions on tests (although more than one teacher said I was a bit too wordy…imagine that!) And I absolutely loved book reports, especially biographies.
I’m constantly entering book giveaways and have won a few times. I’ve even won once here. I read somewhere that you can never have too many books, just not enough bookshelves. 😉

I liked school too and enjoyed English, but I also enjoyed algebra and Latin, Lavon. History not so much at that time. Like it much better now because I get to read the history I want to find out about. And surely not too wordy. I probably wasn’t too wordy then, but I tend to use plenty of words now. I loved getting to read the book but never really liked writing book reports. Guess that’s why I’m not crazy about reviews nowadays.

And definitely you can’t have too many books and I do have too few bookshelves. Good for you for being persistent in entering giveaways to have a chance to win a book or books. I’ll be having another giveaway on here as soon as my newsletter giveaway is over.

  7. When I went to the one room country school, I was always ready to go back to school. Our teacher made it interesting and fun. High school in town was so much bigger and a little scary for me but I did like to study and try to make the Honor Roll.

Going from a one room school to a high school with more students had to be a major difference, Joan. Glad you were able to take advantage of the chance to study and get those good grades. Good teachers make such a difference, don’t they?
