What Is Riggs Saying?

Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.– Orhan Pamuk

And so we come to our last photo in our caption game. This one seemed to go fast. Maybe because I was really busy last week. Sometimes I think I’m too busy, but then I love what I’m doing. Well, most of the time. Walking the dogs – yes. Mopping floors – no. Cooking – sometimes. Cleaning – rarely. Writing – nearly always. Reading – yes, for sure. A person could go on and on with the yes and no answers and especially the sometimes ones.

But I have enjoyed this photo caption game with all of you. You’ve been so great with your suggestions for captions for the photos I’ve posted. Some of your answers have made me smile. Some have made me nod my head that yes, that’s perfect. And some have made me laugh. For my last picture of me sitting high on a rock somewhere at a Rock City park in New York state, you all suggested so many great captions. I tried to remember exactly where we were. Even searched online and looked at our old road atlas, but never came up with a sure location other than New York. We were coming back from a trip to Niagara Falls, heading south toward home.

When I read bn100’s suggested caption, I was puzzled for a minute and then I laughed. What fun to say I was on a solo cheerleading retreat. Several others of you thought of the cheerleading too. That Kentucky sweatshirt I had on, I guess, and the fact that I was sitting cross-legged like cheerleaders sometimes do. I have a couple of granddaughters who are cheerleaders. They do flips – the no hands ones –  and pyramids and all sorts of tricks. Sitting cross-legged is the only cheerleading move I could ever make. No flipping for me. I could never even do a cartwheel.

Many of you mentioned me being on top of the world. A couple of you were singing that Carpenter song about sitting on top of the world. I loved Dana’s Mountain Mama. A lot of you figured I had an exhausting climb up to the high view. Several mentioned that amazing view and the Lord’s wonderful creation. Karen thought I might need a hand to get up, and maybe I did.

Marji said I was sitting down because I was worried about the wind blowing me off. I think that rock was wide enough that I didn’t worry about that. However, I did climb up to the top of the world once on a trail in Shenandoah Park, WV, where I was sitting down because I felt much happier that way.

I love to hike trails in the parks we visit. My husband not so much, but back when he could, he always went along. We picked this trail that said it was fairly difficult. The fairly should have been majorly. But once you are on a trail, it’s hard to give up and turn around. We did some rock scrambling to get to the top where I sat down for my picture. I did feel the wind too strong. Actually, I don’t remember if the wind was blowing or not, but we were up high on a narrow ridge of rocks. This was right before I had to leap from that rock over to another rock. It wasn’t a far leap, but it was a leap and not a step. I like taking steps on my walks, not leaps. But the view was gorgeous. Darrell looks like the king of the mountain in his picture. I probably took it while I was still sitting down. LOL.

But now that I’ve confessed having to hold onto the rocks on that trek, it’s time to finish out our Caption game with the picture up top of Riggs, one of my granddogs.

Did you know that there are over 300 words for love in canine? – Gabriel Zevin

I like dogs. You always know what a dog is thinking. It has four moods. Happy, sad, cross, and concentrating. Also, dogs are faithful and they do not tell lies because they cannot talk.” – Mark Haddon

Riggs is a very expressive fellow and I just know you all are going to come up with some great words for him to be ready to say. I just watched the movie Up with my grandsons this week and smiled once again over the dog that had on a collar to translate his dog thoughts and whines into human words. So that’s what you can do. Look at Riggs and let me know what you think he’s saying.

So what do you think Riggs is trying to tell me?

The deadline to enter the book giveaway (3 winners will get their choices of one of my books plus a grab bag book) is Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at midnight, EST. You must be at least 18 years old to enter. I’ll select the winners by random drawing using Random.org. Each comment you may have made got a number. The odds aren’t too bad, but vary according to how many times you entered and how many other people suggested captions. I’ll notify the winners by email and announce the winners here on Wednesday. I usually only give first names and sometimes a last initial if I have two entrants with the same first name.

I hope you’ve enjoyed playing my Caption game. I love hearing from each and every one of you. We’ll play something else here for more chances to win a book sometime soon.

Ola – Dogs are rarely patient when they see you putting on your walking shoes or grabbing the leash.

Pamela – that’s cute. Riggs probably didn’t do it. It was probably Frankie and Frankie isn’t too worried about how anybody looks at him. 🙂

Joan – A walk and a treat makes most any dog happy.

Connie – that’s funny. I do often have treats in my pocket and most of my grand dogs know that. My Marley, who loves treats, gets very focused when I reach into my pocket. He’s disappointed if I’m just digging for a tissue.

Lucy – Sometimes you have to say you’re sorry to get to watch that favorite dog show.

Linda – Dogs can look like they are starving when you start eating something in front of them.

Kim – At least he’s saying please.

    1. You said we are going…WHERE!?!?! Well. Let’s go! PLEASE!!!

      I just saw this for some reason it didn’t come through for me until today. But decided to write a caption anyhow. :}

bn100 – I can count on you to come up with some good captions. Doggie tooth fairies. 🙂

Lee – That’s always true whenever I keep the kids’ dogs. They all miss their people and are ready to go home. My son-in-law had a different German shepherd before Riggs that lay by the front door and waited almost the whole time they were gone.

Maryann – “Squirrel” Love it and dogs love getting to see those wild creatures too. My son used to have a dog that could catch birds out of the air. Poor things.

Dana – Your caption made me laugh. I’m sure it was the cat and not Riggs. His people do have a cat now so he can blame it for any problems.

Donna Jean – He is a good dog – most of the time. And was always ready to go wherever his people were ready to take him.

Janice – love it. I’m thinking he could have told me a few fine stories.

Karen – A dog has to keep that smile shining.

Emily – He is a handsome fellow. I’m sure he deserved a treat.

Lynda – That’s a good one. I’m sure Riggs would be a big help getting rid of something tasty to eat. I’ve seen videos where the people have the dog talking and he’s asking them if they are doing to eat it all.

Judy – Riggs’ people used to get a box of treats for him in the mail. He could sniff that package out quick as anything.

Marji – My daughter actually does ask Riggs that. “Who’s a good boy?”

Ann – Riggs does love a treat now and again, and he does know he has to sit to get it.

Birdie – Don’t all dogs love to walk so they can sniff out all those wonderful odors.

Suzanne – Yours make me laugh. Dogs do have to go out on occasion.

Linda Diane – He is a good dog and he does love to play. He lives to play fetch.

Paula – A dog is good, he should get a treat.

Lisa – That’s so sweet and dogs are loyal. Even Frankie although he doesn’t always listen.

  4. Oh, boy. I know I’m not supposed to be in here, but the scent of a good writer drew me in. I hope she doesn’t notice the mess of papers strewn about behind her desk.

I probably wouldn’t be happy if he ate my story, Amy. LOL. But I’m okay with the writer scent bringing them in to keep me company while I’m trying to think up a new story. Of course in this picture, I don’t think Riggs is going to be patient while I figure out what next and write that scene. Maybe he’s auditioning for a character part.

  5. “I’m sitting. I’m smiling. You going to say ‘Who’s a good boy…Riggs is a good boy’, and take me for a walk?”
