Some Mysteries Are Harder to Solve that Others

Don’t insult readers by questioning the extent of their imaginations. Most need only to be nudged to solve a good mystery. -Peggy Kopman-Owens

Far be it from me to question the extent of your imaginations. I’m seeing it at work with these mystery photos. And what fun imaginations you have. I love the way you give these mystery photos your best try. It certainly works my imagination to come up with new mystery photos. We’re on the homestretch of the game. This picture and one more. I tested a couple of ideas out on my granddaughter today and she got them both. So, I may have to go back to the drawing board or the picture board, anyway.

But I did get you on Wednesday’s picture. I thought I might, but then sometimes you all surprise me. I’ll think I have a sure thing to have you guessing wrong, and then you all or most of you get it. Not this time though. But you had some great guesses.

Several of you were sure it was cobblestones, rocks or a marble surface. Karen was happy she was close with her guess of the last mystery photo which she said is a first for her. I’m not keeping score, so I didn’t know that. By the way, Karen, I’d probably miss them all if somebody else was posting them instead of me. I’m no good at this type of thing. It’s a lot easier when you know what the picture is before you jerk a piece out of it for the mystery photo.

I had to smile at Birdie’s dried up lettuce leaves, but Tammy was right there with her with lettuce and I liked Judy’s guess of cabbage. I could see that. Wasn’t right, but I could imagine cabbage looking something like the mystery photo. I liked Maylin’s map guess and Karen’s topography guess. Then Amy says her husband was onboard with the Google maps. I don’t think this picture is going to help you discover any new directions. Lisa liked the idea of food with muskmelon. That made me smile because you hardly ever hear anybody saying muskmelon these days but that’s what we called cantaloupes down on the farm when I was a kid. Are they the same things or different? I’ll have to look that up. Great guess, Lisa, but wrong.

Hope and Marji were seeing rocky creeks or streams. And Marji, we usually say creek around here. I do go down the creek and I do take pictures, but this isn’t one of those. Betty had an interesting guess of recycled newspapers and Sandra thought it might be the bottom of shoe with grass stuck on it. Nancy thought a puffy comforter and Donna Jean thought a worn out quilt. Lucy guessed a furnace filter. That might make a good mystery photo. But as I said, the popular guess of was rock, stone walls or walkway, marble tops, granite countertop, cobblestones. I could see all those in the picture.

Okay, the closest to getting it right were Ola and Connie Lee. Of course, Connie did guess four things which helped her chances with shell, rock, moth, bark. And Ola guessed moss on a rock. So, here’s the big reveal.

Ola got the mossy part and Connie Lee got the shell part. Not sure she was talking about a turtle shell, but she did say shell. This big old guy was out wandering around this spring looking for a new pond where he might find a new girlfriend. I took a picture, but you can be sure I didn’t get too close.

We used to have a neighbor who would come get them if you caught them wandering around like this and take it home to eat. But I’ve never been hungry enough to chow down on turtle. So this guy was safe to continue on his way. Even the dogs don’t bother these guys. They will bark ferociously but the same as me, they give the turtle plenty of space.

Thanks for playing. You all got another entry into the drawing for winner’s choice of one of my books and a grab bag book too. Two winners. Deadline to make a guess is Saturday, July 31, 2021 at midnight EST, and you have to be at least 18 to enter. But win or not, it’s fun to exercise your imagination. Up top is mystery photo number 5. I’ll give you a hint. It’s not another turtle. πŸ™‚

Again, thanks for joining in with my Mystery Photo Game fun. I’m ready for your new guesses and hope you don’t all get it right. But we will see.

  1. I’m glad I was part of the way right on the last picture, I just thought it was something in nature but didn’t really know what it was, ha!
This new picture is puzzler! I don’t recall seeing anything like that before. The edges resemble a water hose connection, but the reflective back ground makes me think it has something to do with a light bulb or lamp.

Connie Lee, you weren’t exactly right with that last picture, but you were closer than most everybody else. The turtle shells turned out to be a good stumper. And now we have another one that is getting all sorts of different guesses. Some of them might even be right. You can check back tomorrow to see if you were one of the maybe rights or maybe wrongs.

Paula, I like your guesses. The car vent is very practical, but the house in the rearview mirror has me imagining a scene where the girl has just said goodbye to her parents and is headed for the city and a new life. She watches the homeplace in the mirror until it’s out of sight, wipes her tears and heads toward the rest of her life.

Una, Lavon, Sherri – You sewists do think alike with the bobbin housing/case/slot. I used to do a lot of sewing. Made clothes for the kids and for me, but now I just keep wearing my old clothes and admire the creations you sewists come up with.

Lisa, you are seeing a car vent same as some others.

Connie Rae, you see that car vent too, but then it could be your other guess. That thing a ma jig. I know about those things.

Suzanne, a fan on an engine is a good guess too. Not saying it’s right, but a good guess. Your mirror reflecting pushes my imagination in a different direction. The girl is seeing the old file cabinets reflected in one of the security mirrors in the dusty old courthouse. She just knows that the secret to who she really is might be in one of those old files if only this snippy clerk would let her take a peek.

Emily, your quick on your guess, but car parts can cover a lot of ground. Wheels, fenders, bumpers? Guess that gives you more chance of being right.

Donna Jean, you’re quick with your guess too. A hair dryer. I do have one. I might have taken a picture of it. Maybe.

Karen, you’re like Emily and expanding your chances of being right with your kitchen utensils. Stirring spoons, spatulas, chopping knife? πŸ™‚

  3. That turtle photo stumped me for sure! This one looks like a car headlight with reflections in the chrome.

Amy, my old pond mossy turtle stumped all of you. Wonder if this mystery photo will do the same. I will tell you I showed it to my granddaughter who is fifteen and she got it at first look. So we shall see if any of you all did as well.

Linda, I love a person who is sure, but could you be surely wrong? That remains to be seen when I post the rest of the picture sometime tonight. But I do have a microphone that I’ve been using to narrate Love Comes Home and my Hollyhill stories. I might have taken a picture of it. You sound pretty sure you think I did. πŸ™‚

  4. It looks like some pie crust baking shields lining the mixing bowl and it’s sitting next to a stand mixer. I’m probably way off. Funny how distorted things can look. Lol.

  5. You got me again….now, I can see the turtle shell πŸ˜‰
I don’t have any β€˜good’ idea what this picture is showing πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
I’m guessing it’s a part for a sprinkler system, though.

PS We say creek in Delaware, too

  6. O h my, seeing that turtle made me hungry. Yes, hungry. My Mom & Dad used to own a restaurant and on Fridays they would serve cooked turtle to the mostly Catholic community since turtle was considered fishlike. I haven’t had the meat since the seventies since both my parents are gone now. The meat was so special and very tasty. A cross between beef & chicken. Simmered for hours in butter & a little water it is the most wonderful meal possible. Now I am really hungry for it and it is nowhere to be found here in Minnesota, not like Mom used to cook it anyway. What lovely memories!!

I’ve never eaten turtle, Elaine, but I’ve heard they aren’t the easiest things to prepare for cooking although somebody else told me they only ate the legs. I think the neighbor who used to get the turtles to eat someone took the shell off. My dad never liked wild game or fish or anything like that so I grew up without trying any of those things and don’t really care if I do now. πŸ™‚

I’m glad my turtle took you down some happy memory lanes.

  7. I was totally stumped on the turtle picture! That sure was a good one. Lol
My guess for this picture is maybe a pot of water or water in something with the reflection of some cooking things and a window. Not sure what it is, but it’s fun trying to guess the pictures! I love games like these. πŸ™‚

Glad you’re having fun with your guesses, Briana. Yours is an interesting one. Not sure what could be reflecting in that cooking pot of water.

The turtle did turn out to be a good one. I didn’t even have to crop down the picture that much. Probably the easiest mystery picture I’ve made. Its the pond moss on the turtle’s shell that tricked everyone, I think.

  8. I never even gave a turtle shell a thought on that last one! I have a funny memory from being a child with the “creek” or “stream” comment. Most people in my part of PA say “creek” but some say it as “crick” and for a while when I was little, I thought that they were two different things and couldn’t figure out why they looked the same! πŸ™‚
My guess for this photo is a fan—-but you have probably fooled me again!

That is funny, Hope. Of course, I always thought a crick was something you got in your neck when you slept on your pillow wrong. πŸ™‚ Sounds as though you were a curious child who tried to figure things out even when adults were being a bit hard to understand.

Fan is a fine guess. Not saying it’s right, but a good guess.

  9. I love the turtle shell! This new photo looks like a part of a fan on some old engine. In fact, it looks as if there’s a mirror reflecting an old file cabinet as well as this contraption.

  10. A turtle shell….how cool was that!
Now this new one has me thinking. My first thought was, “I should know what this is….it looks familiar.” So I immediately thought something on a sewing machine….maybe a bobbin housing or a cog. But the white parts make me think blinds or shades. And it also sort of looks like the inner hub on a bicycle sprocket.
I think you’re definitely going to stump a bunch of us again. And that’s what makes this so much fun.
I hope you have a great week coming up. I’ve had a wonderful weekend with my grandkids too….first at the Little League All-Star games and today at a cookout/pool party. Our grands certainly make life sweeter! 😍

    1. My first thought was it looked similar to a bobbin race but I really have no idea what it actually is. We sewists think alike.

  11. I see kitchen utensils! 😊
Oh my, on the turtle!!! I have them all over the inside of our home (collectibles) and outside as well (live). I just love those little critters!!! Never would have guessed a turtle shell! 🐒🐒🐒

  12. It looks like the reflection in a rearview mirror of a house window and distorted roof. But it also looks like louvers of a vent on the inside of a car.
