Thanks for Making The Mystery Game Fun

What’s more fun that a Mystery Photo Game? I guess it’s having two grandsons come spend a couple of nights at Grandma’s house. But being on grandma duty and playing all sorts of games from Jenga to Uno to hiking to the creek had kept me too busy to keep up with all the other things I needed to do. I know you out there who are grandmothers will understand. They do grow up so quickly that you have to take time off to enjoy their visits when you have the chance. These boys are twins although they don’t look that much alike and they have very different personalities. But they are boys and as my father-in-law used to tell my mother-in-law when they had four boys growing up in their house “Now, Mama, they’re boys.” That gave the reason for a lot of happenings, I think. So I remembered that a few times this weekend when the boys were just being boys. But they are really good kids.

They loved driving our Mule and liked it the most when they could go fast. Grandma held on and refused to let them zoom down the steeper inclines. But they are both sure now that they are wonderful drivers. Then we went down the creek where they jumped in the deeper pools. Of course. We all got wet because I slipped on a rock and fell in too. I definitely wasn’t planning to do that. But some of those rocks can be slippery around creeks. I stayed cool the rest of the time, but didn’t go back in the water even though the boys did say I should since I was already wet. But they had fun. I had fun, except for that tumble in the creek.

And then when I did finally get them back to their parents and find my way back to my computer, I couldn’t get things to work. Isn’t that always the way of it? It took me a while to get the picture loaded for the last mystery photo. You all had some great guesses. This one was almost as good as the pecan photo for mysterious qualities, but Lisa and Paula got it. Several of you said it looked like something on a rug and I agree. It does. I actually came across this moth resting during the day on a bush at the vet’s office when I had to take Marley to see about his sore foot a few weeks ago. I knew right away that I was going to save it for my Mystery Photo game.

And now the game is over and I’ve picked the two winners. Peggy Clayton and Judi Trimble. I haven’t gotten an e-mail sent to either of them yet, but I will in the morning after I round up some grab bag books to give them a choice. So watch your e-mail messages tomorrow, Peggy and Judi. And thank all of you for making this one of the best Mystery Photo Games I’ve had. I’ve loved all the guesses, even when you were right. 🙂 I’ll think up something new to do soon for another fun game.

If you entered my newsletter contest, it’s over too, but I haven’t had time to figure out who won yet. How I work these games is I give each comment or message a number. Then when the game is over, I go to Random Number generator and put in the number range and it spits out a number that turns out to be the winner. This time the numbers were 44 and 3.

But even if you didn’t win, I hope you had fun. Now I’ve got to go get some sleep so I can get back to doing edits tomorrow on my next book that will be out next summer. I know the publishers are working on the cover so that will be fun to see soon.

Did you have fun playing the Mystery Photo Game?

Thanks for reading!

  1. Ann, Thanks for hosting your photo mystery game. It was fun trying to figure out what they were.

The picture of the moth is beautiful. I have never seen one like it before, the markings and colors are unusual. Do you know the name of it, and how large it is? It looks quite large compared to the leaves of the bush. It kind of looks like a cecropia moth with is the largest moth native to North America which can have a wing span of 7 inches. I saw one once when I visited Hilton Head Island and was awed by how huge it was. If your moth is one of these it is much more colorful and majestic looking than the one I saw which was very drab in comparison to yours.
I would never have guessed this one. Congratulations to Peggy and Judi!

We get Hummingbird Hawk-Moths here which are quite something to see and watch. Ours here range quite differently in color, and have clear wings. I so enjoy watching them unroll their tongues to get the nectar from the flower.

Thanks again Ann, for keeping us all entertained with this fantastic game.

Readers here told me it is the cecropia moth, Adriann. I didn’t look it up, but I assumed they knew. My readers usually do when they name something for me. This one was sleeping when I spotted it on the bottom of a bush at my vet’s office. I didn’t see it in flight. I have seen the Hummingbird Moths coming to my four o’clock flowers at twilight. They are very interesting and you do think you’re seeing a hummingbird at first when they fly up. I haven’t been able to be close enough to them to see them unroll their tongues though. I’m going to have to watch for that if I see them this summer.

I’m glad you enjoyed my guessing game. It’s the one that most people enjoy the most although I have tried other games at time. I’ll come up with something else soon. 🙂

  2. Loved this game ! The cecropia moth is beautiful, I haven’t seen one in a while. Playing in the creek was always so much fun when we spent the summers on my grandparents farm many years ago. Congrats to the winners !

So glad you had fun playing the mystery photo game, Nancy. I’m so impressed that some of you actually know the name of the moth. I know a few butterfly names like Monarch and Swallowtail, but those names are easier than cecropia. 🙂

Playing in the creek was always a fun time for my sisters and me when we were kids. Nowadays, many kids have a pool in their backyards. I couldn’t even imagine that when I was a kid.

  3. Wow-that last photo was tricky! You could have shown the entire photo and I still would have guessed wrong! Most of our moths are all white around here and not as interesting to look at as the one you captured in your photo. Thanks for the fun game and congratulations to the winners! 🙂

Moths can be as varied as butterflies, Hope. Lots of different sizes and colors. You don’t see ones like this one that often, so I was fortunate to spot him on the bottom of the bush where it was resting out the daylight hours. I need to read up some more on moths and do a post on them sometime. Glad you had fun playing my mystery photo game.

No rules against getting a little help with the mystery photos, Lisa. Sometimes I try them out on my kids and grandkids. If they can’t get them, I know I have a potential mystery photo. They did know the blackberry right away. And the dog nose too. Glad you had fun with the puzzles.

  4. Yay!!! I won!! Thank you, Ann, for so much fun! And, I’m excited about your new book! Something awesome to look forward to.

So glad you joined in with the fun, Lucy. And I liked your toasted marshmallow guess on the last one. Karen and Connie also saw a marshmallow in that picture. I think it’s neat when several people make the wrong same guess. That means it really does look like that whether it is that or not. Did that even make any sense? LOL.

  5. I loved the mystery photo game! I thought I had put my guess in for the doggy nose but I guess the computer glitched it. That moth is beautiful! Happy reading everyone. Congratulations to the winners.

I love it when people look things up about the pictures I post and then tell me what it is. Thank you so much for that, Cecropia. And I may have just missed your dog nose guess. Sometimes if the comment comes in after a new post is up, the new comments sort of push comments on the older posts out of my easy vision. So it may have been my problem. I apologize.

Now off to look up about those Cecropias.
