Happy Birthday to Me

Do you love having birthdays? I do. One a year is enough since they add up pretty quickly even at that one a year rate. 🙂 But birthdays are to enjoy even as the numbers go up. The thing to do is have them, enjoy them, forget about counting them. Once you hit your twenties, the anticipated ages have all been passed up. There’s 13 and finally a teenager, 16 when you can finally get a driver’s license, 18 when you might be graduating high school, and 21 when you can think you’re a full fledged adult. After those, birthdays are just days to enjoy and feel like the world owes you a happy twenty-four hours. Then, when you get a few more years added on, you can decide not to limit the birthday fun to one day. Why not just celebrate all month or at least the rest of the month once the birthday comes?

What do you do to celebrate? I used to always try to give myself a day off to read a book. Just to sit down and read all day if I wanted. Sometimes I’d make myself a cherry cheesecake. Yum. Don’t like those as much as I used to. Now I like Angel Food Cake and strawberries. Some years I’d go on a long hike down the creek with my dogs. That was always a fun birthday gift to myself.

When Mom was still living and able, she always cooked a birthday dinner for me and for my sisters on or around our birthdays. Later on when she didn’t want to cook big meals any longer, we would go out to a restaurant for our birthdays. Now that Mom is gone, my sisters and I carry on the tradition of celebrating our birthdays with a special day together.

Of course, I’m always happy when I get to see the kids and grandkids. This year, my sweet son and daughter-in-law fixed me a delicious birthday dinner. When I got there, the table was set with my grandmother’s plates that my daughter-in-law got when Mom passed and we divided up all the dishes. Fancy stemmed glasses were ready for tea and lemonade that the grandgirls were making. They are good helpers. I was given the seat at the head of the table in the fanciest chair and got to fill up my plate first. Later they made sure I didn’t do any of the clearing of the table. I was royally waited on as they brought out that favorite dessert of cake and strawberries. I think I could get spoiled fast to all that. 🙂

The Caption Game

All the birthday wishes on line were fun too. If you sent me a birthday wish, then thank you very much. It’s good to have so many wonderful reading friends. And I appreciate all of you who played my Caption Game. I hope you had fun. You came up with some great captions for the pictures I posted. I liked the ones you came up with for Frankie and Marley’s picture. Betty’s “I got your back” fit nicely as did all the ones saying how happy Frankie is to have Marley as his buddy. I think he definitely wants us to keep him as Martha said in her caption. I think they will be those “fur-ever friends” Caryl suggested with a play on words. But the game is over for now. We’ll do something else fun soon. I do have a newsletter giveaway going so if you didn’t get the newsletter, just let me know and I’ll shoot you out a copy.

And the Winners Are–

I’ve sent the three winners e-mails. They are Roma, Lavon and Ola. Again thank you all for playing my Caption Game and making it so fun. You’re the best and I so appreciate each and every one of you who reads my posts here and reads my stories too.

So my birthday day is almost over, but I’ve got a couple weeks of my birthday month to go. One of the fun things I’ll get to do in my birthday month is take part in the Heartland Book Festival in Elizabethtown, Kentucky next Saturday, September 21.  If you’re in the area, come on by and say hello and enjoy some book fun.  I’ll think of some more ways to celebrate as well as doing research for my next novel. Time to get to know my characters and get going on their story. I think my main character is going to be named Tansy.

Thanks for reading.

What do you think would be fun to do to celebrate your birthday?

  1. Happy belated birthday Ann ! Sounds like you enjoyed a very special day with family. Heirloom dishes are a wonderful way of including our loved ones at the table who are no longer with us….I have several such collections that hold precious memories. Hope you continue to have fun during the rest of your birthday month !!

Thank you, Nancy. It was a fun day and I’ve made it last with lunch with a writing buddy on Monday and a day with my sisters Tuesday. Today I talked to my agent. Hmm, wonder what I can do tomorrow? Laundry comes to mind, but that doesn’t sound too exciting. 🙂 I know. I can start writing my book!!

  2. I celebrated my first birthday in Elizabethtown, KY. Our Dad was in the Army stationed at Fort Knox. Don’t remember anything about it but I do have pictures. Wish we lived closer so I could attend the book event. I enjoy spending time with family on my birthday which, sad to say, doesn’t happen often enough!
Congratulations to the three lucky winners! I recognize the name Lavon.

Then you’re practically a Kentucky girl, Karen. Not a bad thing to be. 🙂 I’m sure you’re one of many kids who have celebrated a birthday at Fort Knox while one of their parents was serving in the army. It would be fun if you could come to one of the book fairs where I get to talk books. I’d love to have some time to talk books with you.

It is good to get together with family any time we can come up with a happy occasion as a reason.

I’d love to go whale watching, Danie. I was at a author retreat in Monterey Bay several years ago and my husband and I were going to go whale watching on one of the free days. But then a storm made the waves too ferocious and the whale boat wouldn’t go out that day. Sigh. Another dream is going to Alaska on a cruise so maybe I can do some whale watching there.

      Thanks for the birthday wishes.

  3. Happy Birthday, Ann! My birthday is September 15th, also, but I think at 69 that I am probably older than you. :o)
May the Lord bless you with a wonderful birthday year!

Happy birthday a day late back at you, Connie. You are the third new person I know with birthdays the same as mine. I’m not exactly young although I like to think I am, so we just won’t talk years. LOL. But I am thankful for each and every one. Thank you so much for your sweet birthday wishes.

  4. My birthday is in early October, and since my employer’s birthday is the day before mine, we usually celebrate at work at the same time. Then some time in October, my sister and brother-in-law are planning a visit from states away, so that will be fun. My daughter has already found an art project she is going to have fun making for me. Since I’m the big-time book reader in our household, I’ve ordered myself a cute book comforter for my bed. My husband always takes me out to dinner and finds some cool gifts for me. So, it should be a fun birthday!

Sounds as though birthdays are fun around your house, Suzanne. So happy early birthday. I hope you have the best one ever this year and have a great visit with your sister.

  5. I’m glad you had beautiful weather for your birthday. My birthday is in February, and there’s almost always a snow or ice storm that day. On rare occasions when I’m not held hostage by bad roads, I love going to Hobby Lobby. But curling up with a good book while snowbound is also nice.

Was there snow and ice when you were born, Lavon? Worry about getting to a doctor? But February can be a bad weather month for sure. I’ve heard a lot about Hobby Lobby but haven’t made it to shop at one yet. Curling up with a good book sounds more fun to me, regardless of the weather.

  6. I love to give my mother flowers for my birthday. After all she bore me. If your mother isn’t on this earth, take flowers to several ladies at a local nursing home. Brighten someone else’s day…just because you are!

What a very special way to celebrate your birthday, Betty. That would be an extra sweet gesture to brighten up some lonely mothers at a nursing home too. Little things can mean so much and sometimes we don’t take enough time for those little things. But it is good to celebrate just being.
