I love Spring. I also love summer and fall and even winter. That narrows things down a little, doesn’t it? But I wouldn’t really want to live where there weren’t seasons. Where it was always warm. Where the sun shone all summer and only made cameo appearances in the winter. I love the Spring sunshine and when the flowers burst into bloom and chase away the last of the winter blues. So here are some quotes to keep you springing through Spring.
The day the Lord created hope was probably the same day He created Spring. …Bern Williams
What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. …Joseph Addison
Life is like riding a bicycle. You don’t fall off unless you stop pedaling. …Claude Pepper
So hope all of you keep pedaling and have a good trip. Maybe you were able to pedal past some lilac bushes while they were blooming to take a deep breath to get that great lilac scent all the way down to your toes. As those of you who have read my Hollyhill books know, that was Jocie’s favorite scent in Scent of Lilacs.
Then it won’t be long until you can roll your car window down and drive by some locust trees in bloom. Ahh! We had locust trees all over our yard where I grew up. And of course, I sometimes stepped on the locust thorns when I was barefoot in the summertime, but Spring smelled good! I love that scent just like David told Jocie he did in that same Hollyhill book. The scent even played a big part in his call to preach that he got while down in a submarine during World War II. You’ll have to read that scene to figure out how the scent of locust blooms could show up in submarine deep in the sea.
Then there’s some kind of bush that grows wild out in the field. I have no idea what it is. You can’t even see it bloom unless you look really close, but it does have a deliciously sweet scent when it is in bloom. I caught that scent in the air the other day when I was walking the dogs. I still don’t know what it is, but since it seems to have spread rapidly, I’m sure that despite its sweet scent, it’s probably an invasive bush that we might wish wasn’t here on the farm.
But isn’t that the way with many things? The good mixed with the not so good. The locust blooms along with the sticky thorns. Roses with thorns. The sweet-smelling bush taking over the fencerows. The pretty yellow buttercup blooming in the pasture that cows won’t eat because it’s poisonous to them. But you know what, I can’t think of any bad thing about those lilacs except that my bushes haven’t thrived the last few years the way they did in the past.
What are some of your favorite sights and scents of Spring?

I love all the spring blooming flowers, trees, and bushes, even the green grass that always seems to need mowing. I’ve had daffodils, forsythia, azaleas, Bradford Pear tree, snowball bush, plum tree, crab apple tree, peonies, and roses to bloom so far this spring. I’m looking forward to more as I start planting new things around my yard and hanging baskets.
Mine are the same as yours plus the yard full of violets and dandelions. I do love the scent of lilacs and locust blossoms. You can identify that unknown bush by using the camera on your phone and Google. Just bring up google search and you’ll see a little camera symbol on the right. Click that and snap a photo of the bush. It’ll give you some answers.
Here in FL, spring means pollen counts are sky high and all over everything. It means we’re also (this year, anyway) seeing highs in the upper 80’s, we’re in drought conditions and have some wildfires around. Thankfully, none of the fires were near me, and most of them are now out, too. However, my desert roses are blooming, my plumeria’s finally put out leaves, as did my crepe myrtles. So, soon (hopefully!!) they’ll all be blooming!

I hope you get some rain to help your area. The wildfires are hitting people in so many states lately. My daughter lives in SC and everything gets yellow in the spring with the pollen. That makes it tough on those who have allergies.
Enjoy your blooms, Trudy. Desert roses sound pretty and I’ll have to look up plumerias.
I absolutely love springtime! Our 3 fruit trees get beautiful flowers that turn into leaves. My huge lilac bush out front goes into full bloom, so I open the front windows and let the fragrance waft through the house. I always think of my grandmother because she sure loved her lilac bushes.
The sunrises in spring are gorgeous! The oranges and yellows of the sunrise starts my days off praising God for His painting skills. 😍
My wild birds are busy gathering nesting materials. Some even take their beak full of dry grasses and what-not and dip them in the water of the turtle pond. So cute!
There’s nothing quite like the newness of spring.

You have been paying attention to all those sights and sounds of spring, Janette, and I enjoyed seeing and imagining them when I read your words. I could see those birds dampening their nest building material. Smart of them. I need to try to get my lilac bushes healthier so their odor can waft through my windows. I think the frosts got some of the blooms this year.
One of my favorite sounds of springs arrival and warmer weather is the sound of Spring Peepers! A soothing sound at night when you leave your window open a crack. When my youngest son was going out of state to college, he recorded those peepers, to remind him of home!

That’s a unique way of taking a little of home with you when you have to be away, Bonnie. Very smart of your son to take the spring peepers along with him. They started early this year here on the farm and have been singing or should I say peeping spring ever since.
I love all the flowers blooming in Spring and their different scents, but my favorite was a wild rose that used to grow before the neighbors had a tree removed and the bush was a casualty with it. We still have one wild rose bush on our side, but its scent isn’t as strong and doesn’t flow through the air like the other one did for some reason. I also love the smell of sheets and blankets after hanging on the line to dry. I love getting into bed and smelling that fresh smell while falling asleep. I love the quote you shared about hope and spring being created the same day…maybe that is why I was born in April, since it fits my name and spring is my favorite season, but like you I like living in a place that has all 4 seasons, although, some years it feels like we go straight from winter into summer and we don’t get as much of spring as I would prefer.

Wild roses do have a sweet scent, Hope. We still have some of the bushes here on the farm. They are different than the multiflora wild roses that want to take over the field. The pretty wild roses just cling to a corner here and there among the trees and do their blooming. And line dried sheets and towels do smell like spring.
It has to be nice having a name with such a positive vibe.
