“Miracle Girl”

“You can understand why I’m a believer. I have seen miracles.” ~Ben Carson

When I sent out my newsletter with a giveaway celebrating my new book, These Healing Hills and invited readers to share stories about a time in their lives when they felt a special touch from the Lord, I was sure I would receive some amazing stories of faith and love. And I have. I asked for those kind of stories because in my book, my character recognizes the Lord’s providence in her life after she comes to the mountains to train to be a midwife.

Vicki’s story is one step beyond just the Lord directing her path through life. She was a “miracle girl.” But I’ll let her tell her story in her own words.

“I definitely have a story! Twenty-four years ago I was pregnant with my 3rd, and final, child. After one big hemorrhage where I lost half the blood in me, I was admitted at 6 months to spend the rest of my pregnancy in the hospital. Well I started to hemorrhage again at 7 1/2 months. We had moved to a new city and I almost died. I had 36 units of blood transfused. I was originally in guarded condition and then in ICU. One night I was feeling very scared and alone. It was way past visiting hours so no one was there with me. I just felt so alone. I had been in and out of an induced coma. Well, that night I had a doctor come in and ask me if I was the “little gal” from an Idaho town. Yes, I said. Well, he said he and his wife had moved to Cali 6 months before, after he retired, to teach at this University of Cali Hospital. He was from the same town as I was and told me the street he had lived on and I told him mine. I felt such peace. Here was this man from my hometown. Even though I hadn’t lived there since I was 18, it was still home. Anyway, I needed that connection at that moment. He told me he would be back the next day to meet my parents, who had flown in to see me one last time since I wasn’t expected to live. Never saw him again.

A couple of years later I was in my hometown and decided to go through my sister’s old phone books to look for him prior to the time he had moved. He had told me his name was Dr. Wright. I went back years and never found a Dr. Wright that had ever practiced there. I can’t remember anything of his face except it was kind. Everything else I remember was just whiteness about him. His hair, his doctor’s jacket. I truly believe that God sent an angel to me to let me know I was going to be okay. I was. I should have died. My doctors themselves said they considered me living a true miracle and Divine Intervention.

I still cry when I think about it. I had people from all over the hospital coming to see the “miracle girl”! Like I said, I was terrified and having Dr. Wright come at a moment when I was so alone and scared put me at peace. Not only that but after 2 huge hemorrhages and being born at 32.5 weeks, my son was fine.”

How can you not want to cheer after reading a story like that? Thank you so much for sharing your story, Vicki, and for being willing to let me share it forward.

I promised to share more about my giveaway. Here are the prizes. The first picture is a wooden box with a woodsy picture that made me think of some of the mountain scenes in my books. My heroine has my lack of directional sense and is always getting lost when she’s trying to find the mountain homes of her patients. The other is a wooden tic-tac-toe game crafted in the Appalachian Mountains. The 1st place winner gets his or her choice of the prizes as well as a choice of one of my books. 2nd place winner gets the prize that’s left and one of my books. 3rd place winner gets his or her choice of two of my books. Enter by sending me a message from my contact page or leaving a comment here. One entry per person and you must be at least 18 years old to enter. Deadline to enter is September 4, 2017 at midnight EST.

As always, thanks for reading.

  2. Ann, when there isn’t room to post all of your reader’s comment there is a “continue reading” but that takes me back to your post. How do I continue reading their post?

I don’t know, Karen. Not sure what to tell you since I can continue with comments to newer or older comments and haven’t had that problem. Any of the rest of you know how to help Karen keep reading your comments?

  3. Thank you Ann for sharing this wonderful story, really blessed me. I am looking forward to reading your book, sounds kind of like a book I read years ago called “Christy”. I bet this one is going to be one of your best…. Phyllis

I read Christy some year ago. Loved the story by Catherine Marshall. If my story can touch people the way Christy did so many readers, I’d be very happy. You’ll have to let me know what you think of the story after you read it, Phyllis.

Glad Vicki’s story was a blessing to you. The stories readers share with me always touch my heart.

  4. What a beautiful heart rendering story from Vicki. I, also, spent the last two months of my pregnancy in bed, but at home before our Vicki was born 52 years ago. When labor was induced I ,also, hemorrhaged and had to have two transfusions. My story is not as nearly dramatic as the story from Vicki, but I had a peace and calm as I, also, did when her older brother was born prematurely at 7 months. He is 3 years older than Vicki. God is good!!!

Sounds pretty dramatic to me, Karen, and scary when you talk about hemorrhaging. Your faith in the Lord to bring you through and your babies too was surely why you had that peace and calm. Glad you and both babies made it through.

We sing that every Sunday morning to start our church service, Helen. Praise God from whom all blessing flow. A beautiful thing to remember and it’s good to be reminded of the Lord’s love by stories like Vicki’s.

I am blessed by the stories readers share with me and it’s a double blessing when I can share them forward. Glad you like the rainbow picture too, Robin. We are ready for a rainbow around here after the deluge of rain yesterday from the remnants of Harvey.

      1. I sure understand what you’re saying! The remnants of Harvey collided with a low front right over NC yesterday…I’ve never seen such big hail in my life! Charlie (our tom cat) hid under the bed…it was very noisy! Thanks for all the hard work you do for us! Hope you have a fun & safe Labor Day!!!

  6. That was some story! Isn’t it great how God works? He knows just what we need , when we need it! Thanks. Looking forward to more stories. Always love your posts!

Glad you liked reading Vicki’s story. Sometimes blessings rain down on us and we don’t even notice, but when a person faces death, then our awareness of God’s touch surely heightens.

  8. I so appreciate your Christian witness through your writings, both in your books and your blog. May God continue to bless your ministry as you encourage us to seek and cling to the Source of peace and strength. Thank you for being faithful and bold.

Faithful and bold – those are two good words for us all to consider as Christians, Jolene. And of course, we all know where we can get that faith and strength, don’t we? Thank you for reading my stories and my posts here too.

  9. Loved the “Miracle Girl” story – very moving. Thanks so much for sharing this with us and thanks to the “Miracle Girl” for sharing her experience. Great rainbow pic. … Doris

Thanks for letting us know you were moved by Vicki’s story, Doris. Glad you liked the rainbow picture too. At first I put a baby picture of one of my grandkids, but then I thought that might make people think the baby was the miracle girl. So I changed the picture. Rainbows always have a miraculous feel. 🙂

  10. I really enjoy your books, so would love to win 🙂 I had a small miracle just on Monday. We were visiting my niece, and she had not renewed her car registration for nearly 1-1/2 years. We said we would pay so she could drive legally again. We walked into the Dept. of Motor Vehicles, expecting to wait a couple hours. There was no line, and we paid the fees and were out of there in 10 minutes!

That was a miracle, Margaret. 🙂 Anytime there is a short line at the registration place, especially close to the end of the month. I’m sure she felt like you were an answer to prayer to get her back on the road legally. Years ago when I was still a relatively inexperienced city driver and nervous about merging onto roads, I sometimes felt the Lord granted me the small miracle of a clear road to let me merge without thinking I was going to bang into other cars. With all those easy early merges then I gained more confidence and can zoom out there among the cars now. LOL.

      1. An elderly lady who lived near us and attended the same church told me that she prayed for a break in the traffic so they could safely cross a busy 4-lane between their home and church. I’ve taken her example to heart and find myself frequently praying about the challenges faced as a driver. Sometimes God surprises me with an extra large gap in the traffic, and I chuckle as I thank Him and safely merge or change lanes. Even if you have to wait a bit, it’s hard to get mad while you’re praying. And as my physical mobility declines, I’ve asked for a parking space near the door. I’m blessed so often to find the closest one ‘reserved’ just for me. Some might call these miracles. I think of it as God’s reminder that I’m of more value than many sparrows.
