A Moth to the Flame & Mystery Photo 3

“In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.” Aristotle

And sometimes mysterious. As those of you who have played my mystery photo games in the past, you know I sulk when the photo isn’t all that mysterious and everybody, I mean everybody, guesses exactly what the picture is that I posted when I was sure it would be a stumper. The first rose picture, I did figure some of you would get that and you did. But I thought I had a surefire gonna fool you this time picture when I posted mystery picture number 2 last Wednesday night.

And what happens? I check the site before I go to bed that night and there’s one measly guess. Just one, but it was the right guess. That made me consider editing that picture to decrease the size even more. Maybe draw glasses and a mustache on it. Anything to make it harder to guess. I had been so sure that picture was going to be a sure-fire puzzler. Well, I took a deep breath and didn’t do anything else to the picture. You gotta play fair. That’s what Clay learns in my kids’ book Freak of the Week. So I left the picture as it was and went to bed. When I next checked the guesses, I was very happy. None of the rest of you knew what it was. Well, three other people did. But many of you were bumfuzzled. That is a word, isn’t it? Even if Word thinks it isn’t.

A favorite guess was some variation of coat/rug/blanket/shawl/frayed sweater/deer or animal hide. Then a couple of you thought maybe feathers. Others were in the plant world thinking it was a very strange plant stem. There were a couple of feather guesses. Seemed a reasonable guess. Ola thought it might be Oscar’s friend, another dog or a cat (Oscar says he’s never seen a cat he wants for a friend. He says they look better in trees) or chicken. I think Oscar might make short work of a chicken too. Nyla said a fox. Amy and Myra said giraffe. Giraffe? I must have been close to its spots. Jeanne said bird. Marji and April thought dog hair. I could find some of that without trouble. Melissa said mushroom and Kathleen said cattail. That’s actually a great guess. Wrong, but a great guess nevertheless.

Lisa B was the one who guessed it right first thing and had me ready to throw up my hands and give up trying to find a mystery photo good enough to puzzle any of you. Then Kathi said moth or butterfly and Skye said a moth wing. Clinton just said moth like Lisa. And as you can see, they were right. I actually spotted this moth on one of my walks and didn’t post it on Facebook because I immediately thought “Mystery Picture.” And so it was for most of you. Oh, by the way, if you are on my Facebook page, I posted a picture tonight that I spotted on my walk that might have made a real puzzler of a mystery picture, but I decided it might be too big a puzzle. So let’s see if you can guess the new mystery picture up top right away. I can’t decide if it’s a good puzzler or not. So we shall see.

Remember, each time you make a guess on a new mystery photo, you get another entry into my drawing for one of my books (winner’s choice) and a grab bag book by a different author. I’ll give the winners a few choices so they can pick a favorite.

So I’m ready to hear what you think. Oh, and Lisa, when I saw your guess, I thought well, she’s a farm girl too. That’s how she knew what it was. I do appreciate all of you playing the game. The more guesses, the more fun. Even if they are right guesses and I don’t puzzle you. I’ll just let you win that round. Actually, I was looking through my file of mystery pictures a while ago and I saw one that I have absolutely no idea what it is. I know I posted it in a previous mystery photo game, but the rest of the picture wasn’t there. So that might stay a mystery forever. Or I can head back into my blog archives and figure it out by searching for mystery photo.

As always, thanks so much for reading.

      1. You stump me every time, Ann! But it’s fun to try! A moth? I don’t see it when I know what it is. 😊 The rose I do.

  1. I have missed posting about the mystery picture as I am at my mom’s with spotty internet! However, I’m sure I would have guessed a moth! LOL This picture looks like a teddy bear’s ear to me! How’s that? Thanks for always making it fun and challenging!

What a sweet picture, Judy. I can imagine it. Now can I imagine it being right? Hmm, we shall see on Wednesday. Thanks for playing my photo game.

Fun guess, Kathy, and some others have thought about things along the same line. Wednesday you can check back to see if you all are on the right line. Thanks for playing my mystery photo game.

Uh, I think that’s three guesses, Emily, but that’s fine. Guess as many things as you want. Gives you a lot more chance of getting it right. Of course, that part about getting it right remains to be seen.

Welcome to the game, Cheri. Glad Nyla invited you over to make a guess. A coat with a fur collar. Could be. We shall see when the rest of the picture is revealed on Wednesday.

  2. You should be very happy….you stumped me again!
I’m guessing it’s part of a butterfly wing….the ‘furry looking part’ is similar to the moth picture.
Of course, it could be hair on a blue dog 😊

I am, Marji. Smiling big time. Then again, maybe you guessed it. I do like butterflies and it would be fun to take a picture of a blue dog. LOL.

Nice, guess, Ola. But what kind of stuffed animal? Actually it may not even be a stuffed animal. We shall see on Wednesday.

  3. I hate moths with a passion, so that’s probably why the last photo stumped me. I still like my giraffe guess. This time I’m thinking it might be the edge of a cat ear sitting on someone’s lap. The blue definitely looks like fabric.

Some moths are very lovely, Amy, and some very big. Maybe I shouldn’t have said that last to somebody who doesn’t like moths. But then giraffes are bigger, and that was a great guess. You’ve got another great guess today. You could be right. Or then again, you could be wrong. The mystery must continue for a few days. 🙂 Thanks for playing my mystery photo game.

Fun to see the first round of guesses. Thanks, guys. You make it fun and challenge me to find pictures that can turn into mysterious photos. LOL,

Lisa B, you never can tell about me. I might even use two moth pictures in a row if I thought I could trick you all. But then again it could be that bee your husband guessed. After all, Kathi guessed that too.

April, it’s fun that you pulled your husband into the game to help you guess. Lisa did the same and last time Lisa’s husband knew what the mystery picture was. Not saying whether he did or not this time. Have to wait for Wednesday for that. But April, your husband’s guess was interesting. Might even be right. We shall see on Wednesday.

Meagan, Margaret and Paula, I liked all your fun guesses too. I love how you’re using your imaginations. And it could even be that one of you is imagining right. It could be. Then again, it could not be. 🙂

You know, Robin, it just could be. I love taking pictures of butterflies. And they come in all sorts of interesting colors with spots. It could be. It could not be. The mystery will be solved at the reveal of the rest of the picture on Wednesday.

  5. Hi Ann.This has given me such fun! I have watched the website for the past couple hours looking to see if the answer was up!!! Lol…sorry I threw cold water on your fun but , blame it on my husband.he said moth so that what I answered! This time though we are stumped so I guess butterfly .JD says you won’t do moth then butterfly so he says bee. Thank you for these mystery contests…its fun!

  6. To me it looks like two animal ears (toy or real), laid back over a blue fabric. However, I’ve never seen markings like that inside any animal ear… 🙂
