2017 – A New Chapter in Our Book of Time

Each New Year’s Day is like starting a treasure hunt again from scratch, with a slightly altered map. ~Terri Guillemets

Happy New Year! Can you believe it’s 2017? Some of you may be like me and remember thinking of how old you’d be at the turn of the century when you were a kid. It seemed a terribly old age to my twelve-year-old self. But now, looking back, it seems a very nice age. You might remember how worried everybody was that somehow changing from 1999 to 2000 on our computers was going to blow up the tech world. We skated right through that danger. We did have a little program we were told to download to make the date change on our computers at the time. With the way technology changes, it’s unlikely very many of those 2000 computers are still in use. Computers become dinosaurs very quickly.

But New Year’s Days keep coming around. And people keep asking about resolutions. Do you make New Year’s resolutions? I like to think of goals instead of resolutions. This year I might say my goal is to get my new book written without hitting a deadline crunch this summer. Maybe I’ll have a goal of getting a new contract for yet another book deadline. And of course there’s always that goal of losing a few pounds, right?

For fun, I looked back through some of the things I’ve put in our church bulletins over the years on New Year’s Days. Here they are. Hope they make you smile or perhaps inspire you to look forward to 2017 with new hope.

May all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions. – Joey Adams

Now there are more overweight people in America than average weight people. So overweight people are now average. Which means you’ve met your New Year’s resolution. ~ Jay Leno

A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and other the other.

A lot of people, they get all caught up in the New Year’s resolution thing and I think it gives them an easy way, later, to say, ‘Oh, that was just a New Year’s resolution’ and not take it seriously. People who really want to make changes can make them any day of the year, whether it be the Jewish New Year, the Chinese New Year or any day that suits them. You’ve got every day of your life to make changes. ~Dr. James Wilcox

I AM THE NEW YEAR

I am a new Chapter in your Book of Time. I offer you new vistas of life.
I offer you new treasures sublime. I hold for you a perfect peace.
I bring all these to you through Christ Jesus. I bring through Him the abundant life.
I urge you to acknowledge Him as Savior and Lord.
I urge you to obey His Word, to follow His guidance.
I warn you not to squander my time. I warn you that my days are numbered.
I appeal to you to give me due consideration.
I appeal to you to accept my proffered gifts.

I am only one. But still, I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.  …Edward Everett Hale

Thanks so much for reading. May you have a prosperous and blessed 2017.

Siri never knows what I’m saying, Karen. I rarely ask her anything so her vast knowledge is wasted on me. But sometimes these machines do like to think they know what we’re typing before we get out the letters. Can be helpful at times and irritating at others. But never worry about it on here. Usually we can figure out what the “real” meaning was supposed to be before our techie friends substituted something else.

  1. I enjoyed reading Promisr of a New Year. Thank you for your insights. Past along from my sister (whom I might mention should have been a writer) to you: 2017 is going to be, on a scale of 1 to 10, a “10” year. 2 +0 +1 + 7 = 10! 😊

I like copying inspirational quotes and often jot them down on my desk calendar. Sometimes we do think we are only one and so we can’t do anything, but the quote reminds us that there are some things we can do. Plus, when you add in the Lord if we are in concert with His purpose, we are never only “one.” Here’s a quote I have on desk calendar attributed to Michelangelo. “The greatest danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark.”
