Mystery Picture Fun Number 3

Murder-at-the-CourthouseWhen I’m doing one of these mystery photo contests, I start looking at every picture I take, wondering if I can trick you all with a close up bit of one of the photos. Some of them are too fuzzy when I enlarge a section of the photo. Some of them are too obvious. I tried hard to use something from the cover of my new mystery, Murder at the Courthouse. That is one of the books the winners will be able to choose when I do the drawing on October 25, 2015. I did a snippet of the cmystery picture 3at’s head. It looked just like a cat’s ear or when I tried the other end of the cat, the tail was plain as day. Neither picture would have fooled any of you. So I tried zooming in on the barbershop jar in the window. The comb was even more obvious than it looks on the cover. I tried a courthouse pillar, but the windows were definitely windows. So I can give you all a hint about this week’s mystery photo. It is not from the cover of my book!

I had to go looking elsewhere. I found a pretty one. Not sure how tricky it will be. I never know about that. Sometimes I think the picture will be hard to guess and virtually everybody knows what it is. But again the best part of it all is having fun with the pictures and another good part for you is that each time you guess on a new mystery picture, you get another entry in the drawing. So with more entries, your chances of winning go up. At least they should.

I’m one of those people who rarely wins anything, but a couple of years ago, I bought tickets at a charity raffle on a little Christmas tree. They had a number of decorated trees and a jar in front of each tree for you to add your ticket. Some people were putting a ticket in each jar. I bought five tickets and put them all in the jar in front of the tree I liked best. My iphone 2 2013 307 (2)chances went up and my name was pulled out of the jar. It’s the little dog tree that I put in what we call Oscar’s room. A perfect place for it.

You’re probably readMystery picture 2y to know about the last mystery photo and wondering why I am going on about Christmas trees. Okay, here’s last week’s mystery picture and the rest of the picture too. The chimney on top of an old log cabin we saw in the Smoky Mountains.

Only one person got the guess completely right. Nancy actually said a chimney on a cabin roof. Several of you knew it was rocks, but you were down by the creek. ๐Ÿ™‚ Others guessed a fungus on a tree. That was a great guess. Just happened to be wrong. And Kathi had help from her grandson to guess a pine cone. I can see where he might think that. Thanks for guessing. You all got another entry into my drawing. Remember, it doesn’t have to be the right guess, just a guess to enter the giveaway. But you must be 18 to enter and the winners (3) will be picked by random number drawing using an internet program.

Hope you’ll have fun guessing on the new picture. Thanks for playing my guessing giveaway game.

It is pretty, isn’t it, Sandi? Whether it’s nature’s jewelry or not remains to be seen. Has to stay a mystery until Sunday. Then I’ll try to come up with a new picture.

Sorry to hear you have that kind of health problem, Peggy. It’s hard not being able to do the things you want to do and enjoy doing. But sounds as if you’re hanging in there if you’re still taking your girls out to let them sniff after those rabbits. As for your guess, whether you are right or wrong will have to stay a mystery until Sunday.

Hi, Flora. It does seem to be a popular guess. So it may turn out not to be such a mystery or it could be everyone is wrong. ๐Ÿ™‚ We’ll see on Sunday.

  4. this looks like a cob web with morning dew drops. It could be a cob web after a rain also. Is that two guesses? Oops!

Guess as many times at you want, Patricia. But that is probably just one guess with a bit of variation. ๐Ÿ™‚ Come back Sunday to see if you’re right and to check out a new mystery photo. I’m going to have to search for a hard one.

      1. You know, I believe I’m the only person who called a web “cob” web. Others called it a spiders web. Then I wondered about the spelling. Maybe it’s spelled “Cobb”. Why is it called cob web? I’m going to have to research this. Now I’ve opened up a whole new mystery!

You do pose an interesting question, Patricia. Here’s what I found on Dictionary.com. They say cob was an old English word for spider. Well actually coppe, but then they must have said cob and over the years things changed. Changed and we forgot about cob being a word for spider.

Word Origin and History for cobweb
          n.
early 14c., coppewebbe ; the first element is Old English -coppe, in atorcoppe “spider,” literally “poison-head” (see attercop ). Spelling with -b- is from 16c., perhaps from cob. Cob as a stand-alone for “a spider” was an old word nearly dead even in dialects when J.R.R. Tolkien used it in “The Hobbit” (1937).

          1. Thank you so much, Ann, for this wonderful information. I must say that in the 21c., here in Hardin County Ky., the word “cob” is alive and well.

So far all the guessers have agreed. I’m not saying you’re right, Connie, Marji, Evelyn and Phyllis, or that you’re wrong. Have to come back for the mystery solution on Sunday. But thanks bunches for dropping by with a guess. I’ve been out of town and unable to access the post, but I’m home now.
